Prigozhin responded to reports about the ex-commander of the PMCs who fled to Norway

AboutThe head of the PMCs indirectly confirmed that one of the former commanders, Andrei Medvedev, is in Norway. He said in December that Yevgeny Nuzhin was subordinate to him, whose execution received a wide resonance

Prigozhin responded to reports about the ex-commander of the PMCs who fled to Norway

The press service published a response from the founder of the Wagner PMCs, Yevgeny Prigozhin, to a request from the Norwegian publication Aftenposten, which asked for comment on reports about one of the commanders of a private military company who fled to Norway.

“Yes, indeed, Andrei Medvedev worked in the Norwegian battalion of the PMCs Wagner, which is called Nidhegg, because he had Norwegian citizenship. He should have been brought to justice for attempting to mistreat prisoners. Detailed materials are available in the security service of the PMCs “Wagner” and are prepared for transfer to Russian law enforcement agencies. Until now, he was wanted. Be careful, he is very dangerous,” the answer says.

Nidhegg in Norse mythology is a snake that devours perjurers, vile murderers and adulterers. Previously, there were no reliable reports of the existence of a “Norwegian battalion” as part of the Wagner PMCs. The answers of Prigozhin’s press service are often humorous.

The fact that Andrei Medvedev, who calls himself the ex-commander of the Wagner PMCs, crossed the border with Norway and asked for asylum, was previously reported by the founder of the Gulag project. No» Vladimir Osechkin. Medvedev himself said that he left the PMCs immediately after the expiration of the four-month contract signed on July 6, 2022. According to him, he was the commander of Yevgeny Nuzhin, who defected to the side of Ukraine. On November 12, telegram channels showed footage of Nuzhin’s execution with a sledgehammer. Medvedev told reporters that he was ready to testify for an international investigation.

In early January, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in response to a request from Aftenposten, said that 67 mercenaries from Norway were listed as part of Wagner’s PMCs. According to Prigozhin, after the end of the conflict in Ukraine, 52 people are ready to return to the kingdom and organize a military coup there.

Russian Su-27 escorted German P-3C

Su-27 multi-purpose fighter

The Russian Su-27 fighter was raised to escort the German P-3C “Orion” over the Baltic Sea. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense in the telegram channel.

“The crew of the Russian fighter identified the aerial target as a P-3C basic patrol aircraft of the German Navy and escorted it over the Baltic Sea,” the report says.

After the U-turn of a foreign military aircraft, the Russian fighter, not allowing violation of the state border, returned to the home airfield.

The flight of the Su-27 was carried out in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters, the ministry stressed.

In early January, the Ministry of Defense reported that the Russian Air Defense forces in 2022 discovered and escorted more than 2 million air objects, of which 2 thousand were reconnaissance aircraft. Also, during the past year, the forces on duty were alerted No. 1 more than 4 thousand times.

On January 13, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu announced that the alliance would transfer aircraft with the AWACS airborne warning and control system to the Romanian capital Bucharest in order to “monitor Russia’s military activity” and support NATO’s enhanced presence in the region.

The US Treasury described the behavior of Russian oligarchs before 24

ToUS Treasury: Russian oligarchs made “strange transactions” before February 24, During the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, large Russian businessmen and officials began to make “suspicious transactions” that allegedly indicated attempts to evade sanctions, according to the US authorities

The US Treasury described the behavior of Russian oligarchs before 24

US Treasury Building

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Agency at the US Treasury FinCEN has published a report on cross-border financial transactions made by major Russian businessmen and officials during the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine and shortly before them. As follows from the report, in the period from January to April, the volume of transfers increased, and a number of large owners began to restructure their assets, transferring them to their children and relatives.

FinCEN estimates the volume of suspicious transfers at tens of billions of dollars. There was nothing illegal in many of them, but FinCEN considers them “suspicious” for the reason that in most cases the sources of funds in Russia are unknown and may be related to corruption.

  • For example, one person on the list of tracked persons significantly increased expenses on a Swiss credit card from December to February 2022. Presumably, the funds were spent on the purchase of luxury goods and works of art. FinCEN notes that these transactions were made even before the outbreak of hostilities and the mass imposition of sanctions.
  • Some large businessmen during the outbreak of hostilities began to send large transfers to their children living abroad, including students in the United States. The money was spent on buying real estate and luxury goods. Another businessman’s child living in the USA received a $1 million transfer in February.
  • A number of large businessmen began transferring their assets to business partners and family members through shell companies. For example, in early April 2022, a major Russian businessman transferred assets to his ex-wife living in the United States. In March and April 2022, another entrepreneur transferred beneficial ownership of several trusts and businesses to his children.

FinCEN does not name the persons whose actions were monitored.

Military operations in Ukraine began on February 24, but tensions around Ukraine and disagreements between Russia and the West began to grow a few months before. Information that Moscow was planning military actions in Ukraine began to appear in the Western media in October 2021, and in December 2021, the US authorities recommended that US citizens refuse to travel to Ukraine.

The United States imposed anti-Russian sanctions due to the start of a military operation in Ukraine in several rounds. Restrictions were imposed on companies from the banking sector, sectoral sanctions were imposed, export restrictions were significantly expanded. Separately, Washington imposed personal sanctions. Under them were the founder of USM Holdings Alisher Usmanov, the head of Rostec Sergey Chemezov, the head of the Web.Igor Shuvalov, head of Transneft, Nikolay Tokarev, press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov, as well as members of their families, including wives and children. In addition, President Vladimir Putin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and other high-ranking politicians, officials and the military were under sanctions.

After the sanctions were imposed, some businessmen openly announced the restructuring of assets. So, on September 15, Vladimir Potanin’s Interros announced the transfer to the charitable foundation of up to 50% of the shares of Rosbank controlled by the holding. The businessman, who ranks second in the Forbes 2022 ranking of Russian billionaires with a fortune of $17.3 billion, said that this would ensure the financial stability and long-term viability of the foundation’s charitable programs. Potanin in an interview with RBCI noted that this was done in order to protect a credit institution from sanctions risks. “Of course, such a motive is also present. Changing the shareholder structure in Rosbank will make it easier for the bank to interact with external partners,” Potanin said in response to a question about whether this scheme is related to reducing sanctions risks. Despite this, when in mid-December the US Treasury announced the imposition of sanctions against Potanin, Rosbank also came under restrictions.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the sanctions imposed against businessmen, compared them to a “robbery in the Wild West”. He said that the persons involved in the sanctions lists earned their money in an honest way and it is impossible to call them oligarchs.

ToKremlin: Putin discussed with Erdogan the exchange of prisoners with Ukraine and the new gas hub Putin, during a conversation with his Turkish counterpart, pointed to the “destructive line of the Kiev regime”, which relied on the intensification of hostilities with the support of the West. Putin discussed with Erdogan the prisoner exchange with Ukraine and the new gas

Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone talks with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during which they discussed the exchange of prisoners with Ukraine and the creation of a regional gas hub in Turkey, according to the Kremlin website.

“Both sides confirmed their commitment to further comprehensive development of Russian-Turkish cooperation. Among the priorities is cooperation in the energy sector, including the supply of Russian natural gas and the creation of a regional gas hub in Turkey, the report says.

Erdogan also raised the issue of the exchange of prisoners of Russia with Ukraine, primarily the wounded.

Putin, in turn, pointed to the “destructive line of the Kiev regime”, which relied on the intensification of hostilities with the support of the West, which is increasing the volume of arms supplies.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed his readiness to take on the role of mediator to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The parties also reviewed the implementation of the Istanbul agreements on the export of grain from Ukrainian ports and the unblocking of supplies of Russian food and fertilizers.

Moscow and Ankara did not report on whether the issue of creating a humanitarian corridor for the removal of the wounded, as well as women and children from Ukraine, was discussed.

Earlier, on January 12, Turkish Commissioner for Human Rights Sheref Malkoc said that Erdogan intends to discuss “today-tomorrow” with Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky the initiative to organize a humanitarian corridor.

Erdogan noted the day before that Turkey supported Russia, despite “attacks” from other countries. “While everyone was attacking Russia, we didn’t do it. On the contrary, we maintained relations with Mr. [Vladimir] Putin as well as before,” he stressed.

Earlier in January, an exchange of prisoners of war took place between Kiev and Moscow according to the formula “50-50”. On January 11, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, Tatiana Moskalkova, met with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Lubinets, who gave her letters from Russian prisoners of war that they had written to relatives. On January 12 , Moskalkova announced the third in a weekmeeting with the Ukrainian Ombudsman. On January 15, Lubinets reported that the Turkish authorities proposed to launch a humanitarian corridor between Russia and Ukraine on their territory for the return of wounded military and civilians.

The Guardian learned about the disputes over Russian scientists and hadron

Gguardian: a number of scientists do not want to indicate colleagues from Russia in their work on the Hadron Collider The publication of more than 70 studies on the Large Hadron Collider is delayed due to disagreements at CERN about how to indicate the authorship of scientists from Russia and Belarus in scientific papers

The Guardian found out about the disputes over Russian scientists and hadron

A deadlock has arisen in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) due to the fact that some scientists oppose the designation of Russian researchers as co-authors of their scientific papers, writes The Guardian.

As the newspaper notes, usually a lot of scientific articles about experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are published during the year; thousands of scientists and engineers participate in projects. However, in March 2022, after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the number of published works on the LHC fell to zero. The reason is that CERN cannot agree on how to indicate the authorship of scientists from Russia and Belarus (this is about 7% of the participants) and whether to indicate them at all.

CERN came to a temporary compromise— not to publish these works yet. At the same time, the articles continue to be prepared, they are sent for review. According to the Guardian, more than 70 studies have not been published yet. Preprints of the papers can be found on the arXiv server, but there is no list of authors and organizations funding the research. RBC sent a request to the CERN press center.

“There really is a delay. About 70 or more, less— I don’t know. An important point is that the disagreements are not at CERN, but in different scientific collaborations, each of which includes groups from many countries and institutions. As far as I understand, CERN has stated that it will make the decision of the collaborations. At the moment there have been votes on several options, nonethe option was not supported by the majority. So, as far as I know, there is no agreement yet. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the details of each of the options, so I can’t give you any specifics. I also don’t know what options will be offered in the future,” Ivan Polyakov, an employee of the LHCB collaboration, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, told RBC.

According to physicist Fyodor Ratnikov, it has not yet been possible to develop new publication rules that would suit everyone. He said that for his Ukrainian colleagues, “this issue is, of course, extremely painful,” but most of them “do not shift responsibility” for what is happening in Ukraine to Russian scientists. “I would say that some of my colleagues from the EU are much more radical,” Ratnikov noted.

So far, the situation has not greatly affected the financing of research or the awarding of scientific degrees, the publication notes. However, a professor from the University of Delhi, Brajesh Choudhary, a participant in one of the experiments at the LHC, warns that a further delay in publications will lead to “many problems” for scientists.

The authorities of the Zaporozhye region “do not touch” residents who are waiting for the arrival of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Acting Governor Yevgeny Balitsky told the TV channel “Crimea 24”.

«Zhdun— is a weak person, <...> condemn him for thinking or believing in a return to the past, where he had the opportunity to earn somewhere on a budget, where he could steal and nothing would happen to him for it <...>. We don’t touch them, we give them time to think,” the official said.

But if a person participates in “extremist events”: “writes nasty things in social networks, “insults the commander-in-chief” or the Russian Armed Forces, the flag and other symbols,” and does not respond to the first warning, then it is applied to himthe measure of expulsion”. Before being evicted from the region to Ukraine, such citizens dig trenches for two weeks.

Those residents who knew that their family members were engaged in “extremist activities” are also leaving the region. “This is a category of people who indirectly participated in the murder, the demolition of bridges and power lines. This information was not reported— and therefore became accomplices»,— Balitsky said.

Zaporozhye region became part of Russia after the referendum, which was held at the end of September. On September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an accession agreement with Balitsky. On the same day, the Kherson Region, the DPR and the LPR were included in the Russian Federation.

The administrative center of the Zaporozhye region, the city of Zaporozhye, is under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Melitopol has been declared the temporary capital of the region within Russia.

The American general told what the United States will teach Ukrainian

GGeneral Mark Milli: The United States has begun in Germany the training of AFU soldiers for large-scale battles, the United States has begun training the Ukrainian military so that they “can successfully defend their country,” General Mark Milli said. The training in Germany will last up to eight weeks, about 500 people will pass it

American general told what the US will teach Ukrainian

The US Armed Forces have begun extended training of the Ukrainian military at the Grafenwer training ground in Bavaria to prepare for large-scale combat operations, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milli said.

“We want Ukrainians to be able to successfully defend their country,” Milli said (quoted by the Washington Post). According to him, Ukraine “does nothing but defend itself” and tries to regain the territories lost during the fighting.

Milli clarified that the training will focus on combined arms combat, in which different types of troops take part, including aviation, armored vehicles, artillery, etc.

About 500 Ukrainian servicemen will undergo extended combat training, which started on January 15. Milli informed that they would be back on the battlefield within five—eight weeks. According to the general, the goal of the program is to deliver the weapons and equipment promised to Kiev and train the military to use it, “before the spring rains begin,” AP reports. The training is aimed at ensuring that the APU has worked out the skills of offensive and repelling attacks, the agency writes.

According to WP, Millie plans to spend this week in Europe to get acquainted with the preparations and meet with European colleagues. On Friday, January 20, he, along with Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin, will personally take part in a meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine at the Ramstein base.

The European Union is also planning to create a military training mission for Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the idea, saying that it is aimed at “training, in fact, anti-Russian units”.

A survey in China showed a sharp decline in US support

Journal of Current China Affairs: The share of US supporters in China has fallen to a record 23% A survey by the Journal of Current China Affairs showed that the share of Chinese supporting the US has fallen to record values in recent years. At the same time, Chinese citizens continue to have a positive attitude towards most European countries

The survey in China showed a sharp decline in US support

The majority of respondents in China view the United States “unfavorably” or “very unfavorably”, while the share of support for the United States has fallen to a record 23%, writes the South China Morning Post, citing a survey by the Journal of Current China Affairs.

The authors conducted a survey among 2,083 Chinese respondents, during which they were asked to determine their attitudes towards the United States and nine European countries. They were offered four options: from “very favorable” to “very unfavorable”.

The survey showed that the overwhelming majority of Chinese expressed “unfavorably” towards the United States, while 43% of them expressed “very unfavorably”. Only 23% of respondents were “very” or “somewhat” positive.

At the same time, respondents spoke favorably about almost all European countries: the exception was the United Kingdom, which was rated positively by only 46% of respondents. Germany, on the contrary, became the most popular country in the survey with 69% positive reviews. “Perhaps the low popularity of Britain in China was caused by the fact that the UK was a close ally of the United States in putting pressure on China on a number of controversial issues,” the authors of the study note.

Experts also noted a sharp divergence of Chinese views on European countries and the United States, despite the fact that these countries are usually grouped together as the West in the main English and Chinese discourses.

Tense relations between China and the United States have persisted for several years. When Donald Trump was President of the United States, Washington increased sanctions pressure on Beijing. In August of this year, Taiwan became an irritant in relations between the two countries: the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi flew to the island, whose independence Beijing does not recognize. China considered her arrival an interference in the internal affairs of the state. A few days before the visit, Xi Jinping warned American President Joe Biden that anyone who “plays with fire will get burned” and expressed his intention to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

At the same time, Xi Jinping has repeatedly said that China and the United States are responsible for stability in the world. He called security and peace “the most precious treasure” of mankind and noted that the United States and China, “being permanent members of the UN Security Council and the two largest economiesWe must not only steer Sino-American relations in the right direction, but also take proper international responsibility and make efforts for peace and tranquility in the whole world.”

Izvestia learned that the “cannibalization” of aircraft has been legalized in Russia

«Izvestia”: The government legalized the “cannibalization” of aircraft in Russia Russian airlines asked the Ministry of Transport to legalize the “cannibalization” of aircraft in August, explaining this by the need to “flexibly manage the serviceability of the fleet.” According to Izvestia, the relevant amendments were adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers in December

«News» learned that in Russia legalized «cannibalization » aircraft

At the end of December, the Russian government legalized the possibility of removing serviceable spare parts and components from civil aircraft for their storage or subsequent installation on other vessels, including those in production, Izvestia reports, citing sources in the aviation industry.

The interlocutors of the newspaper clarified that permits should be issued for such details (airworthiness coupons, passports or labels); when removed, it is necessary to perform and document an analysis of their operation and condition assessment, during subsequent installation, to test and re-evaluate the condition.

In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers allowed to install non-original foreign components on the foreign fleet remaining in Russia and requiring maintenance, that is, those that are not provided for in the operational documentation of the developers (Boeing, Airbus, Embraer), Izvestia writes. Such parts can only be manufactured by companies that have the approval of six foreign aviation administrations and according to procedures similar to those established in American legislation.

At the same time, as the interlocutors of Izvestia clarified, in Russia and in previous years, spare parts were moved from plane to plane, and there was also a practice of installing non-original components approved by the authorities of the United States or the European Union. “Now these stocks are apparently running out, and it became necessary to use components of Chinese, Iranian production,” one of the sources explained.

The fact that Russian airlines asked the Ministry of Transport to legalize the cannibalization of aircraft, Izvestia reported in mid-August with reference to a letter from the President of the Association of Air Transport Operators (AEVT) Vladimir Tasun. He noted that the rearrangement of components is worldwideThis will allow Russian companies to flexibly manage the serviceability of the fleet of aircraft. It was proposed to legalize the removal of components through the correction of the March Government Decree No. 353 “On the Specifics of Licensing Activities in the Russian Federation in 2022” and its aviation part.

Since the end of February, the United Kingdom, the United States, the EU and other countries have imposed restrictions on flights of Russian airlines. The European Union has also imposed a ban on exports to Russia of goods and technologies used in the aviation and space sectors, as well as a ban on insurance and maintenance of goods related to these industries.

The American manufacturer Boeing has temporarily stopped the maintenance and support of Russian airlines and the supply of spare parts to them. Similar measures were taken by the European manufacturer Airbus.

“Kommersant” with reference to sources in the Ministry of Transport, AEVT and two airlines wrote that under the negative scenario of the program for the development of the Russian air transport industry until 2030, from the second half of 2022, the fleet of foreign aircraft in the country will begin to decrease intensively and the disassembly of aircraft for spare parts will ensure the airworthiness of the remaining fleet in operation. According to a newspaper source in the Ministry of Transport, from half to two thirds of foreign aircraft are under threat of disassembly.

In mid-June, at that time, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov warned that Russia needed to prepare for the fact that some foreign aircraft would have to be disassembled for spare parts. According to the calculations of the Ministry of Transport, the fleet can be operated for another five years, he added.
