The survey in China showed a sharp decline in US support

The majority of respondents in China view the United States “unfavorably” or “very unfavorably”, while the share of support for the United States has fallen to a record 23%, writes the South China Morning Post, citing a survey by the Journal of Current China Affairs.

The authors conducted a survey among 2,083 Chinese respondents, during which they were asked to determine their attitudes towards the United States and nine European countries. They were offered four options: from “very favorable” to “very unfavorable”.

The survey showed that the overwhelming majority of Chinese expressed “unfavorably” towards the United States, while 43% of them expressed “very unfavorably”. Only 23% of respondents were “very” or “somewhat” positive.

At the same time, respondents spoke favorably about almost all European countries: the exception was the United Kingdom, which was rated positively by only 46% of respondents. Germany, on the contrary, became the most popular country in the survey with 69% positive reviews. “Perhaps the low popularity of Britain in China was caused by the fact that the UK was a close ally of the United States in putting pressure on China on a number of controversial issues,” the authors of the study note.

Experts also noted a sharp divergence of Chinese views on European countries and the United States, despite the fact that these countries are usually grouped together as the West in the main English and Chinese discourses.

Tense relations between China and the United States have persisted for several years. When Donald Trump was President of the United States, Washington increased sanctions pressure on Beijing. In August of this year, Taiwan became an irritant in relations between the two countries: the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi flew to the island, whose independence Beijing does not recognize. China considered her arrival an interference in the internal affairs of the state. A few days before the visit, Xi Jinping warned American President Joe Biden that anyone who “plays with fire will get burned” and expressed his intention to protect the territorial integrity of the country.

At the same time, Xi Jinping has repeatedly said that China and the United States are responsible for stability in the world. He called security and peace “the most precious treasure” of mankind and noted that the United States and China, “being permanent members of the UN Security Council and the two largest economiesWe must not only steer Sino-American relations in the right direction, but also take proper international responsibility and make efforts for peace and tranquility in the whole world.”
