Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone talks with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during which they discussed the exchange of prisoners with Ukraine and the creation of a regional gas hub in Turkey, according to the Kremlin website.

“Both sides confirmed their commitment to further comprehensive development of Russian-Turkish cooperation. Among the priorities is cooperation in the energy sector, including the supply of Russian natural gas and the creation of a regional gas hub in Turkey, the report says.

Erdogan also raised the issue of the exchange of prisoners of Russia with Ukraine, primarily the wounded.

Putin, in turn, pointed to the “destructive line of the Kiev regime”, which relied on the intensification of hostilities with the support of the West, which is increasing the volume of arms supplies.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed his readiness to take on the role of mediator to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The parties also reviewed the implementation of the Istanbul agreements on the export of grain from Ukrainian ports and the unblocking of supplies of Russian food and fertilizers.

Moscow and Ankara did not report on whether the issue of creating a humanitarian corridor for the removal of the wounded, as well as women and children from Ukraine, was discussed.

Earlier, on January 12, Turkish Commissioner for Human Rights Sheref Malkoc said that Erdogan intends to discuss “today-tomorrow” with Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky the initiative to organize a humanitarian corridor.

Erdogan noted the day before that Turkey supported Russia, despite “attacks” from other countries. “While everyone was attacking Russia, we didn’t do it. On the contrary, we maintained relations with Mr. [Vladimir] Putin as well as before,” he stressed.

Earlier in January, an exchange of prisoners of war took place between Kiev and Moscow according to the formula “50-50”. On January 11, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, Tatiana Moskalkova, met with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Lubinets, who gave her letters from Russian prisoners of war that they had written to relatives. On January 12 , Moskalkova announced the third in a weekmeeting with the Ukrainian Ombudsman. On January 15, Lubinets reported that the Turkish authorities proposed to launch a humanitarian corridor between Russia and Ukraine on their territory for the return of wounded military and civilians.
