President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky again called for the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council, and also invited him to dissolve himself. The head of state stated this at a meeting of the Security Council via video link.

According to Zelensky, the UN Security Council must make decisions that will lead to peace in Ukraine. If the organization cannot do this, then it should “suspend Russia” from participating in the Security Council, the head of state believes. He explained that Moscow blocks decisions related to its actions.

“Or show me how you can reformat. Or if your current format has no alternative and there is no way out, then only self-dissolution will continue,” the Ukrainian president said.

In early March, Zelensky had already demanded that Russia be excluded from the organization’s Security Council. At the same time, representatives of the countries of the permanent members of the Security Council rejected this possibility. For example, Britain’s permanent representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, stated that there were no grounds for suspending Russia’s membership. This possibility was also rejected by the United States.

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia explained that it is impossible to deprive Russia of membership in the UN Security Council according to its charter.

At the same time, Western countries have spoken out in favor of excluding Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. This was stated by British Foreign Minister Liz Truss and US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield. Nebenzia, commenting on this idea, called it “unimaginable”, and also stressed that “it will not facilitate, stimulate, simplify what is happening in the negotiations on peace between Russia and Ukraine”.

The Russian envoy also said that the Russian special operation in Ukraine is not progressing at a rapid pace, since the military does not hit civilian targets in order to save the lives of civilians. “These are people close to us,” Nebenzia said. According to him, all accusations of improper behavior against the Russian military participating in the special operation are unsubstantiated.
