The possibility of a conflict between great powers is increasing in the world, said the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, speaking in the House of Representatives at a budget hearing. The broadcast was hosted by C-SPAN.
According to him, Russia and China are trying to change the rules on which the current global world order is built, both countries have “significant military potential”. “The world is becoming more unstable, and the possibility of a significant international conflict between the great powers is increasing, not decreasing,” he said.
At the hearing, Milli also said that permanent military bases should be built on the territories of the countries of the eastern flank of NATO, but personnel rotation should be carried out there.
“My advice is to create permanent bases, but not to place personnel there on a permanent basis,” Milli said. According to him, the rotation at the bases will allow not to spend money on the construction of infrastructure for military families, including housing.
According to Milli, “many allies, including the Baltic States, Poland or Romania, are ready to create permanent bases.” They are ready to build them and pay for them, the general believes.
In mid-March, Latvian President Egils Levits advocated that American troops be permanently stationed in the Baltic states to protect them from Russia. In January, Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas also said that the countries of the region were negotiating to increase the number of alliance contingents. In February, Britain decided to double the number of British military and equipment deployed in Estonia as part of the NATO mission.
