The EU Council has reached an agreement on combating the energy crisis

The EU countries have reached an agreement to combat the energy crisis, the head of the EU Council, Charles Michel, said on Twitter.

“The EU Council has reached an agreement on energy. Unity and solidarity prevail,” he wrote.

According to him, the leaders “agreed to work on measures to curb energy prices for households and businesses.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the decision of the EU leaders. She noted that it is about “strategic guidance on the energy package” from joint purchases to investments.”

“The EU Council agreed that, in light of the ongoing crisis, it is necessary to accelerate and intensify efforts to reduce demand, ensure reliable supplies, abandon rationing and lower energy prices for households and businesses throughout the union, as well as that the integrity of the single market should be preserved.”,— the statement says.

The EC should assess the impact of crisis management measures on existing long-term contracts.

We are talking, in particular, about the voluntary joint purchase of gas, with the exception of mandatory aggregation of demand in the amount equivalent to 15% of needs, “dynamic price corridor” for gas, “energy solidarity” in case of interruptions in gas supplies, efforts to save.

According to Michel, the EU countries face three tasks:

lower gas prices, guarantees of security of supply and continued work to reduce demand.

In mid-October, the European Commission, as part of the fight against rising gas prices and preventing supply disruptions, proposed to oblige EU countries to share both pipeline gas and LNG with each other in case of shortage and warn about plans to purchase more than 0.5 billion cubic meters.

Other proposals include mandatory participation of EU countries in joint procurement to meet at least 15% of their storage capacity targets (for this, companies will be able to form a European procurement consortium) and the introduction of a price restriction mechanism on the virtual hub Title Transfer Facility (TTF) (we are talking about setting a dynamic price limit for transactions). In addition, States should continue efforts to reduce gas demand.
