The St. Petersburg City Court recognized the “Spring” movement as extremist (the Ministry of Justice had previously recognized it as a foreign agent) and banned it in Russia. This is reported by the association of lawyers “First Department” (founded by lawyer Ivan Pavlov, whom the Ministry of Justice recognized as a foreign agent) in the telegram channel.

The Joint Press Service of the courts of St. Petersburg confirmed to RBC the information that the court recognized the “Spring” movement as extremist. The case was heard in closed mode, they added.

According to Russian legislation, recognition of an organization as extremist entails a requirement to liquidate it or ban its activities.

The St. Petersburg City Prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit to ban the movement on September 30. According to prosecutors, the activities of “Spring” are aimed at “undermining public security and the foundations of the constitutional system of Russia”, creates conditions “for destabilizing the social and socio-political situation”, and also “forms public opinion about the need for a change of power in Russia».

The activists of “Spring” Evgeny Zateev and Valentin Khoroshenin were searched on September 24. In early May, a case was opened against them under Part 3 of Article 239 of the Criminal Code (creation of a non-profit organization that encroaches on the identity and rights of citizens).

“The first Department” reported that their case was combined with another one initiated under Part 1.1 of Article 212 of the Criminal Code (inducement, recruitment or involvement of a person in mass riots). The article provides for a penalty of five to ten years in a penal colony.
