Former British Foreign Minister and leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party and, consequently, the prime minister of the country and supported Rishi Sunak, the BBC Broadcasting Corporation reported. Thus, it will be Sunak who will become the next head of government.

By 14:00 local time (16:00 Moscow time), candidates for the post of prime minister and party leader had to enlist the support of at least 100 Conservative parliamentarians. Almost 200 deputies spoke in support of Sunak, and Mordaunt – about 30, which is why she decided to withdraw her candidacy.

“It’s quite obvious that we need clarity now. We made this decision for the good of the country. As a result, we have chosen our next Prime Minister. <..."Rishi has my full support," Mordaunt said in a statement.

Thus, 42-year-old Sunak will become the next prime minister. Boris Johnson, who had previously intended to take part in the prime minister’s race, decided not to run; however, it is possible that he may get one of the key posts in the government, for example, the head of the Defense Ministry. On Monday night, Sunak and Johnson held a lengthy meeting during which they could agree on future cooperation.

Sunak headed the Treasury from February 2020 to last July. He resigned due to disagreement with Johnson’s actions, and then decided to compete for the post of prime minister.

Acting Premier Liz Truss announced her resignation on October 20. She was the head of government for only 45 days – this is the shortest period in modern Britain. Truss admitted mistakes in economic policy, because of which she was forced to leave.

Initially, the results of the election of the prime minister were to be announced on October 28, but due to the fact that only one candidate remained in the race, Sunak will be officially proclaimed prime minister on October 24 or 25.
