In the EU, this is explained by the fact that from there wheat diverges to the rest of the world Russia wants to have a clearer idea of how Ukrainian grain is distributed and has requested data from the UN secretariat, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with the head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hisein Brahim Taha. The broadcast was conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister noted that 5.7% of Ukrainian grain goes to the poorest countries, and more than half goes to Europe. As Lavrov said with reference to the UN secretariat, the EU explained that they only receive grain there, which then spreads around the world, including to the poorest countries. “I wanted, of course, to have a clearer picture, so we asked the UN secretariat, which is engaged in this whole operation and which has all the data, to provide statistics on the movement of grain to the final destination, where the final consumer is,” the minister said. He explained that the adjustment of the grain agreement depends on this.
Lavrov recalled that the deal on the export of Ukrainian grain was a package and the second part concerned the export of Russian fertilizers, but it is practically not being implemented.
“Three months have passed since the conclusion of the agreements in Istanbul. The UN secretariat has pledged to solve all the problems that are created by Western sanctions <...>. On Friday, a representative of the UN secretariat said that the UN is working tirelessly to remove these restrictions,” the minister noted. He stressed that with regard to fertilizers, clear legal exceptions are needed “to meet the needs of our counterparties”.
