Protests against the energy policy of the authorities took place in Germany

Protests against the energy policy of the authorities took place in Germany, more than 24 thousand people took part in them. This is reported by the DPA agency.

The protest was organized by trade unions and eco-activists. The actions were held in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Dresden, Frankfurt, Hanover and Stuttgart. A total of 24 thousand people took part in them. The German police claim that the number of protesters was less.

The participants of the action demanded to provide financial assistance to the poor category of citizens who suffered from high electricity prices. They propose to do this by raising the tax for the rich. The protesters also demand to stabilize gas supplies to the population.

Russian gas supplies to Europe decreased after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Some European countries refused to pay for gas in rubles in the spring, others stopped receiving it as a result of suspensions and cuts in supplies via the Nord Stream-1, the main export route to Germany. At the end of September, explosions occurred on both “Northern Streams”.

President Vladimir Putin said on October 12 that Russia is ready to supply up to 27.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually via the undamaged Nord Stream-2 branch, but a decision of the European Union is needed. The Chancellor of Germany is Olaf Scholz, in turn, has described Russia as an unreliable supplier and accused her predecessor Angela Merkel of errors in the energy policy, in which Germany became overly dependent on energy supplies from Russia.
