WithSHA imposed sanctions against Nicaragua for Russia and human rights
Sectoral sanctions affected the banking sector of Nicaragua, as well as the import of a number of products into the country. Also, sanctions were imposed against 500 officials of the country, they are banned from entering the United States.
The sanctions are imposed because of violations in the November elections in Nicaragua, during which the authorities detained dozens of oppositionists. Washington also accuses the country of closing 2 thousand non-governmental organizations, attacks on religious figures and the closure of universities.
Another reason for the imposition of sanctions is cooperation with Russia in the field of security against the background of a special operation in Ukraine. According to the American authorities, there are Russian armed forces and equipment in Nicaragua. Nicaragua also became one of the four countries that voted during the UN General Assembly in support of referendums in eastern Ukraine.
