Russia’s approach to relations with Western countries will be radically adjusted in the new edition of the country’s Foreign Policy Concept. This was reported to TASS by Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Alexander Venediktov.

“The Foreign Policy Concept will carefully reflect all the realities of the international situation that has changed in recent months, and our approaches to interaction with various players and regions will be clarified. Our approaches to the collective West will undergo a profound adjustment,” he said.

According to him, now this document, which defines Russia’s priorities in foreign policy, as well as its goals and objectives, is being adjusted taking into account various factors.

The current Concept of Russia’s foreign Policy was adopted in 2016. In November 2021, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that “profound changes” had taken place in the world since that moment and that the document would be updated.

The draft of the new foreign policy concept prepared by the Foreign Ministry was presented to President Vladimir Putin at the end of January, but after the meeting he instructed to finalize it. At the end of February 2022, Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a special Russian operation.

The current version of the Foreign Policy Concept states that there is a “serious crisis” in relations between Russia and Western countries.

The document says that Russia is interested in building mutually beneficial relations and dialogue with the United States, for the development of constructive cooperation in the field of arms control, and expects Washington to act on the world stage based on the norms enshrined in the UN Charter. At the same time, the strategy notes that the policy of “deterring Russia”, which is carried out by the United States and its allies, undermines”regional and global stability, harms the long-term interests of all parties,” as well as that Moscow considers the creation of a global US air defense system as a threat to its national security. The Foreign Policy Concept also states that Moscow consistently supports the “translation into legal form” of political declarations on the indivisibility of security, regardless of membership in political unions.

The European Union is described in the foreign policy concept as an important trade, economic and foreign policy partner. Moscow is interested in cooperation with the EU countries “on the principles of equality and mutual respect of interests,” the document says. The strategic objective in relations with the EU was to be the formation of a common economic and humanitarian space from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. One of the main barriers to this was called the visa regime in relations between the countries.

Ukraine is mentioned in this document once. This paragraph says that Moscow is interested in developing “the whole variety of political, economic, cultural and spiritual ties with Ukraine on the basis of mutual respect, building partnerships while respecting its national interests.” ExceptIn addition, the document states that Russia “will make the necessary efforts for a political and diplomatic settlement of the internal Ukrainian conflict” together with interested states and international structures.
