President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky ignored the remarks of Hungarian leader Catalina Novak on the law on national minorities concerning the situation of Hungarians in Transcarpathia.

According to Novak, 150 thousand Hungarians live in Transcarpathia, whose rights are now severely restricted due to the current version of the Ukrainian law on minorities. She considered this unacceptable and conveyed her comments in a letter to Zelensky.

“The answer to this letter has not yet been received, the answer is now (we receive) every day in Transcarpathia, on the street,” Novak said (quoted by RIA Novosti).

The Hungarian President noted that this also applies to representatives of the Romanian, Bulgarian and Greek minorities.

In mid-January, the head of the Office of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Gergei Guyash, said that the country would not allow the transit of weapons to Ukraine through Transcarpathia in the interests of the local Hungarian minority.

According to him, the goal of the Hungarian government is to protect Transcarpathia from war as long as possible.

Later, Magyar Nemzet reported that Hungarian flags and signs in Hungarian were removed from public institutions of the Transcarpathian city of Mukachevo and local villages.

Hungarian Foreign Ministry Secretary of State for Bilateral Relations Tamas Mentzer condemned the actions of the Ukrainian authorities in Transcarpathia against the Hungarian community, calling them unacceptable.

He stressed that “if Ukraine wants to become a member of the European Union, constant and systematic harassment and deprivation of the rights of national minorities are unacceptable.”
