Five Johnson government ministers have resigned

John Glen

The Economic Secretary of the Treasury and the City Minister of the British government, John Glen, resigned of his own accord. The politician announced this on Twitter, attaching to the post a letter addressed to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“I am leaving the government with deep regret,” Glen wrote.

In the letter, the politician noted that he resigned from office because he felt “complete distrust” of the Prime minister and the manner of his leadership, and was also dissatisfied with the short-sightedness he showed. “The country deserves better,” Glen added.

As Bloomberg notes, Glen was one of the main allies of ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, who resigned the day before along with the head of the Ministry of Health Sajid Javid. Both ministers noted that they could not remain members of the Government for ethical reasons. Their posts were taken by Education Minister Nadhim Zahavi and Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Stephen Barkley.

Along with Glen, Robin Walker, the British Minister of State for Schools, Will Quince, the Minister for Children and Families of Great Britain, and Victoria Atkins, the Minister of Justice, the Junior Minister for Prisons, and the Minister for Resettlement from Afghanistan, resigned. The same decision was made by the Minister of Agricultural Innovation and Adaptationtowards climate change by Joe Churchill.Since the evening of July 5, the Solicitor General (Deputy Attorney General) Alex Chuck and other officials have left Johnson’s office. Bim Afolami also resigned from the post of Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party.

The dismissals began amid a scandal that broke out last week when it became known that Chris Pincher, the deputy chief organizer of the ruling Conservative Party in the House of Commons, staged a drunken brawl at the elite London club for conservatives “Carlton” in Piccadilly. A drunk 52-year-old politician molested two men. He did not deny it and resigned. At the same time, it turned out that Johnson, when appointing the Pinscher, knew that he had previously been suspected of harassment. The Prime minister apologized to the voters.

Before that, there was another scandal involving Johnson in the UK. It was connected with the non-compliance by the British Prime Minister with the anti-epidemiological restrictions imposed by him. The British media published information about parties for members of the government and other officials at the Prime Minister’s residences in White Hall and Downing Street, which took place during the lockdown. In early June, the Conservative Party faction held a vote on the issue of a vote of no confidence in the prime minister, but the majority of parliamentarians opposed it.
