Putin expressed condolences on the death of the head of OPEC

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences over the death of Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Mohammed Barkindo, the Kremlin’s press service reported.

“By his long and effective work in OPEC, he has rightfully earned a high international reputation,” Putin wrote, noting Barkindo’s contribution to the creation of a unique mechanism of interaction between OPEC plus, designed to ensure the stable and efficient functioning of the global oil market in the interests of producers and consumers of black gold.

Putin called Barkindo a “true friend” of Russia and asked him to convey his condolences to his loved ones, “as well as to all citizens of Nigeria.”

The Head of State sent a telegram to Nigerian President Mohammad Buhari. Barkindo was a statesman of this country.

Mohammed Barkindo died on the evening of July 5, the head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mele Kyari said the next morning. He was 63 years old. Barkindo Chiari did not name the cause of death.

On the day of his death, the Secretary General met with the President of Nigeria. Buhari thanked him for his achievements as OPEC Secretary General. Barkindo also delivered a speech at the Nigerian Oil and Gas Conference in Abuja.

Barkindo has served as head of OPEC since July 2016 for two consecutive terms. His powers were due to expire on July 31, and the representative of Kuwait, Haysam al-Gais, had already been elected as the new secretary general of the cartel.
