Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis about the march of “rabid Turks”.

He denies plans to strike Athens with a developed Typhoon missile if Greece “acts smart”. Erdogan accused the country of arming its islands in the Aegean Sea.

“Mitsotakis, you say here and there, but know that if you make a mistake, the rabid Turks will march,” Erdogan threatened.

Elections will be held in both countries in the summer.

At the end of December, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu threatened Greece with military action if it expands the borders of territorial waters in the Aegean Sea. “Our position is clear: no 12 miles. We will not allow territorial waters to expand even by a mile in the Aegean Sea,” Cavusoglu argued, commenting on reports that Athens is going to expand its borders near the island of Crete.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea allows each State to set the width of its territorial sea to a limit not exceeding 12 nautical miles. However, Greece’s decision to expand its borders in the Aegean Sea will be viewed by Turkey as a “reason for war”.

On January 19, Mitsotakis did not rule out that it would be possible to settle differences through negotiations with Erdogan and the parties would not dare to go to war. At the same time, he objected to Turkey’s energy and territorial ambitions in the region. In particular, we are talking about the agreement signed by Ankara on the delimitation of the maritime border with Libya, which gives Ankara rights to a number of territories (a gas pipeline must pass through them; an agreement on the construction of a pipeline near the southernthe shores of Cyprus were signed by Greece, Israel and Cyprus at the beginning of 2020). Greece called it unacceptable. “We cannot accept, for example, the fact that Turkey is signing a memorandum of understanding with Libya, which deprives Crete of any rights to maritime zones,” the Prime minister said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
