“It is important that the international community is doing everything possible to hold Russia accountable,” Foreign Minister Marise Payne said, the West Australian edition reports. The minister added that last week the Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to declare Canberra’s intention to continue the expulsion of diplomats at the highest level.

By the end of March, Australia banned the supply of bauxite, aluminum ore and alumina to Russia. The Australian Foreign Ministry explained then that the purpose of this restrictive measure was to limit Russia’s ability to produce aluminum, which occupies one of the main positions in Russian exports, and alumina from Australia provides 20% of the country’s needs. Rusal, the largest aluminum producer in Russia, then warned that there were risks for business due to sanctions. The second largest alumina asset of the company is the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, located in Ukraine, production has stopped there.

Imports from Russia to Australia were also subject to restrictive measures— Canberra abolished the most favored nation regime for Moscow and imposed an additional duty on imported goods in the amount of 35%. The restriction will take effect from April 25.

From April 5, Japan will also restrict exports of luxury goods to Russia, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Koichi Hagiuda warned about this at the end of March. “The government has decided to impose a ban on the export of luxury goods to Russia, including premium cars, precious stones, jewelry,” he said. In early April, Hagiuda called the strengthening of sanctions against Russia the only possible option.
