Zelensky said he was ready to consider the return of Crimea to non-military

The President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, in an interview with the Financial Times, said that “it will only be for” if someone offers Kiev a way to return Crimea to the country by non-military means.

“I understand that everyone is puzzled by the situation and what will happen to Crimea,” he said, noting that if the solution proposed to Ukraine assumes that the peninsula will remain part of Russia, “it’s not worth wasting your time.”

According to the Ukrainian leader, the armed conflict will not end until the country regains its lost territories, otherwise the resumption of hostilities will be a matter of time.

In August, Zelensky said that Ukraine is ready to return Crimea “by any means it deems right.” The head of the Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, replied that the peninsula would never cease to be part of Russia.

Crimea became part of Russia in the spring of 2014 after a referendum, most of the participants of which were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine and most Western countries do not recognize its results, consider the peninsula an occupied territory and accuse Moscow of annexation. The Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that the issue of Crimea is closed.

President Vladimir Putin also rules out the possibility of discussing the status of the four regions that became part of Russia in the autumn of this year (DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions), stating that their residents made their unequivocal choice in referendums. The majority of states did not recognize the results of the vote, and Zelensky approved the decision to refuse to negotiate with Russia as long as the country is headed by Putin. At the same time, he did not rule out a dialogue with Russia, “which is really ready for peace.”

The Russian authorities, in turn, accuse Ukraine of unwillingness to negotiate and of demonstrating a purely belligerent attitude, rather than striving for a truce. The Kremlin believes that Ukraine does not want and cannot negotiate with Russia, therefore, “the goals of the Russian Federation will be implemented through the continuation of a special military operation.” On the eve of the press secretaryRussian President Dmitry Peskov said that the Ukrainian authorities have the opportunity to resolve the conflict and “stop, respectively, all the suffering, possible suffering of the population” by fulfilling the requirements of Russia. What they are, the representative of the Kremlin did not specify. However, at the beginning of the special operation, the authorities called the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine the goal of the fighting.
