Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has allowed his resignation if it can save the country. He stated this in an address to the nation, Alo reports.

“If there was a need to preserve the state in any way and give it some time, I would not hesitate. Now is not the moment, but I have not hesitated,” he said, answering a question about his readiness to leave the post of president.

According to him, this is his last presidential term.

Vucic stressed that he is a “soldier of his country” and promised to be guided by the interests of Serbia when making decisions.

Earlier, on January 23, the chairman of the executive committee of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Darko Glisic, conveyed the words of Vucic, who heads the party, that he was ready to resign as leader.

The Head of State said this at a meeting with the top of the party at the headquarters in Belgrade. According to Pink TV channel, the participants of the meeting discussed “Western pressure on Serbia in connection with Kosovo”.

According to Grisic, if Vucic resigns, it will be the end of the party and its career in the political arena of Serbia. “This is followed by something that is the worst and darkest scenario for Serbia, which I can’t even imagine,” he added.

In October last year, Vucic, in an interview with Prva TV channel, said that he was ready to leave the post of president in order not to recognize the independence of Kosovo. He stressed that if the decision on Kosovo demanded by the West is humiliating, he will resign.

Serbia does not recognize the independence of Kosovo and considers it part of its territory. This provision is enshrined in the Constitution of the country. The main population of Kosovo is Albanians, but in Northern Kosovo the majority are Serbs.
