However, in early August, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. This visit led to an aggravation of relations between Washington and Beijing (which considers the island its breakaway province). The Chinese side considered it an attempt to interfere in internal affairs.

Because of Pelosi’s visit, Beijing staged large-scale military exercises off the coast of Taiwan. The American ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, accused the Chinese side of “creating an artificial crisis”.

After the speaker’s arrival, the island was visited by the fourth US representative in a month. Beijing has accused the United States of violating the “one China” principle.
