US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the US authorities have brought charges against Russian businessman Konstantin Malofeev. He is suspected of trying to circumvent Western sanctions.
According to Garland, Malofeev managed to create a scheme that allowed the publications controlled by him to operate in Europe. Also, the American authorities intercepted “millions of dollars” that the businessman was supposed to receive from an unnamed financial institution in the United States.
Malofeev is also suspected of financing Russian citizens who sought the separation of Crimea from Ukraine.
“The US Department of Justice will continue to do everything possible to bring to justice other Russian oligarchs responsible for trying to circumvent sanctions,” Garland said.
Malofeev came under Western sanctions in 2014. Ukraine, the EU, the USA and Canada considered that the fund headed by him provided support to the militia of the republics of Donbass. In 2015, Malofeev founded the conservative TV channel “Tsargrad”. RBC sent him a request.
In 2018, commenting on the restrictions imposed against him, Malofeev said that they did not affect him much. “Of course, the sanctions have had a certain negative impact on the business environment, mainly limiting opportunities for the implementation of joint projects with foreign partners. But since my current business projects are concentrated on the territory of Russia, in general, I cannot say that the sanctions have had a significant negative effect,” he said.
