Transnistria borders on Ukraine, where a special military operation of Russia is taking place. Since the end of the active phase of the Transnistrian conflict, which began during the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russian peacekeeping forces have been located in the unrecognized republic. The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) declared secession from Moldova in 1990, until 1992 there were hostilities, which ended with the signing of an agreement “On the principles of the settlement of the armed conflict in the Pridnestrovian region of the Republic of Moldova”.

On April 22, the deputy commander of the Central Military District for military and political work, Major General Rustam Minnekaev, said that the Russian military planned to take control of Donbass and Southern Ukraine during the second phase of the special operation in Ukraine. Control over the south of Ukraine will provide another corridor in Transnistria, where “facts of oppression of the Russian-speaking population” are noted, Minnekaev noted. The Foreign Ministry said yesterday that they see no prerequisites for escalation in Transnistria and advocate a peaceful settlement.
