The Ukrainian government has dismissed Anton Gerashchenko from the post of deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. This was announced by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Alexey Goncharenko (the “European Solidarity” faction) in Telegram.
“The government dismissed Anton Yuryevich Gerashchenko from the post of Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine,” Goncharenko wrote.
Mary Hakobyan and Bogdan Drapiaty were appointed as the new deputy Ministers of Internal Affairs, the deputy added. At the time of publication, there were no reports from the Government of Ukraine about personnel changes.
Changes in the leadership of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry began in mid-July. Avakov, who retired, became the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in 2014 and led it under the governments of Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Vladimir Groisman, Alexey Goncharuk and Denis Shmygal. He wrote his resignation letter of his own volition on July 13. Avakov decided to leave after the request of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Gerashchenko said. According to deputy Irina Vereshchuk, the president had “questions” because of the investigation of the murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet, which occurred in 2016. The new head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was the deputy of the Rada Denis Monastyrsky.
Anton Gerashchenko has repeatedly acted as the speaker of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry on high-profile cases and situations,for example, it was he who reported that in September the Belarusian authorities forcibly expelled a group of oppositionists to Ukraine. Gerashchenko initiated the creation of the website “Peacemaker”, which publishes lists of “enemies of Ukraine”.
