The New Yorker reported that the US did not promise Kiev a large number of HIMARS

The US authorities did not promise Ukraine to supply a large number of HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, writes The New Yorker, citing a source in the US Department of Defense.

“We said right away: you won’t get many such systems. Not because we do not trust you, but because they simply do not exist in unlimited quantities on planet Earth,” the source of the publication in the Pentagon said.

Each HIMARS launcher costs about $ 7 million and the Ukrainian forces could launch more than 5 thousand GMLRS missiles per month, the newspaper writes, pointing out that the American Lockheed Martin produced only 9 thousand such shells per year.

Ukraine received the first batch of HIMARS in June, including GMLRS shells, whose range is about 150 km, are used for them. In August, the Pentagon stated that Washington had transferred 16 HIMARS to Kiev and that was enough. At the same time, on October 4, US President Joe Biden announced plans to transfer four more such systems to Ukraine. Kiev received them in mid-October, reported the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Alexey Reznikov.

The Ukrainian authorities are negotiating with Washington on the possibility of supplying missiles for HIMARS with a wider range, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova said in October. We are talking about ATACMS, whose flight range is up to 300km. In September, CNN, citing sources, wrote that the United States is not yet ready to transfer such missiles to Ukraine.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized Western countries for military assistance to Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry reported the destruction of HIMARS systems and ammunition depots for them during a special operation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the supply of long-range and more powerful weapons to Kiev would become a “red line” for Moscow.
