The air and sea landing of the Armed Forces of Ukraine over the past two days has made several unsuccessful attempts to land on the island of Snake in the Black Sea, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported.

During the attempt to capture the island, more than 50 Ukrainian saboteurs were destroyed, the bodies of 24 soldiers remained on the shore, the ministry added.
“As a result of the competent actions of the Russian armed forces unit located on the island, the Ukrainian provocation was thwarted. The enemy suffered heavy losses,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry of Defense called the attempts to land on Snake Island a provocation planned on the direct instructions of the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, with the participation of advisers from the United States and Great Britain.
Snake Island is part of the Kiliysky district of the Odessa region. It became part of Ukraine in accordance with the Paris Agreement of 1947 after the transfer of Bessarabia to the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zmeiny became the subject of a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Romania. The International Court of Justice of the United Nations in The Hague in 2009 recognized the Snake Island, and not a rock, as Romania sought.
On February 25, the second day of the Russian special operation, the Ukrainian authorities reported that they had lost control of the island. On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that 82 people had laid down their weapons in the area of the island of Zmeiny and voluntarily surrendered to the Russian armed forces.
