Bloomberg found out about the EU plan to reject the ban on the transportation of Russian oil

The European Union intends to soften the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, in particular, to abandon the proposed ban on the transportation of Russian oil to third countries by EU vessels, Bloomberg writes, citing sources.

At the same time, the ban on insurance of flights of ships with Russian oil is still being discussed and will be a serious obstacle to exports if it is approved, sources say.

The lack of a unified position among the G7 countries played a major role in the decision to abandon the ban on the transportation of Russian oil by European vessels. Thus, Greece, whose economy largely depends on shipping, advocated the exclusion of this provision from the sanctions package, the agency reported.

However, according to sources, the remaining provisions in the package will still significantly complicate Moscow’s situation, since the ban on providing insurance will cover most of the world fleet of oil tankers carrying Russian oil.

On the eve of Bloomberg reported that the EU permanent representatives met to discuss new sanctions against Russia, but did not reach an agreement.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said earlier that the sixth package of sanctions should include the rejection of Russian oil by the end of 2022 and the disconnection of a number of banks from SWIFT. Bloomberg and Reuters also reported that Brussels proposes to prohibit European courts from providing services related to the transportation of Russian oil to third countries.

In order for the package to be adopted, all 27 EU countries must agree on it. As the agency wrote, the participants of the meeting failed to get Hungary’s consent to ban the import of Russian oil, and Greece and Cyprus have not yet supported restrictions on oil transportation.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out that the European Union does not have a unified position on the issue of adopting part of the sanctions against Russia. He called on the EU to take a unified position.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on May 6 that Budapest would not allow the European Union to impose an embargo on Russian oil, as this would undermine the security of the country’s energy supply and its economy.

According to him, the country is ready to defend its economic achievements until the EU’s plan to impose an embargo on oil from Russia “collapses”.
