Nikita Khrushchev

Comparisons of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Nikita Khrushchev, who held the post of first Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee hardly appropriate, despite some similar signs, said the representative of the head of state Dmitry Peskov. His words are quoted by radio “Mayak”.

“Putin” is Putin. And Khrushchev – he was Khrushchev. The kingdom of heaven be upon him, behold. Therefore, here I do not think that it is possible to compare Putin with someone,” Peskov explained.

He noted that in the current and the Caribbean crisis, it was about a “clash between us and the collective West led by the United States,” however, the nuances, of course, are different.

Nikita Khrushchev served as the first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1953 to 1964, he also headed the Council of Ministers of the USSR from 1958 to 1964. In October 1964, he was ousted from power by a group of party figures, which included the future head of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev.

The Caribbean crisis lasted for two weeks in October 1962, it arose shortly after the US deployment of medium-range Jupiter missiles in Turkey. In the USSR, it was considered that due to the short flight time, they could reach Moscow and large industrial centers without the opportunity to strike an equivalent retaliatory blow. The Soviet Union, as part of the secret operation “Anadyr”, placed ballistic and tactical ground-based missiles (some of them were with a nuclear charge) in Cuba.

The parties agreed on a compromise: the USSR withdrew nuclear missiles from Cuba, the USA – from Italy and Turkey, a hotline of direct communication between the heads of state was created between Moscow and Washington.

At the end of October, answering a question about the parallels of the current situation in the world with the Caribbean crisis, the president said that he could not imagine himself in Khrushchev’s place. “By no means,” Putin stressed and added that Moscow is ready to “resolve any issues.”

The Security Council considers the Caribbean crisis an example of how two superpowers can “put aside the deep ideological contradictions separating them in the name of constructive joint work for the benefit of all mankind.”
