Presidents of Russia and Cuba Vladimir Putin and Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez unveiled a monument to revolutionary Fidel Castro in the north of Moscow. The Moscow City Duma approved its installation in mid-February.

The monument is located on a square in the Sokol district, which is also named after the former leader of Cuba. She appeared in the capital in early 2017 after the death of Castro. In the same area there are other streets named after foreign socialist leaders, including Salvador Allende and Hugo Chavez.

The authors of the bronze monument were sculptor Alexey Chebanenko and architect Andrey Bely. “This is a man-block standing on a cube. Not on the island, this is the shape of the pedestal. I put him not in a dubious movement, but rigidly on his legs wide apart, as if feeling the gusts of the wind of change, all the adversities and difficulties passing through him,” Chebanenko explained to his interlocutor.

Diaz-Canel has been in Moscow on a visit since November 19, the day before he laid flowers at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin, and also met with the leader of the Communist Party Gennady Zyuganov, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev and spoke at the plenary session of the State Duma. On November 22, he will hold talks with Putin, and he is also scheduled to visit China as part of the tour.
