The main candidate for the post of governor of the Kirov region was the referent of the Kremlin Department for Ensuring the activities of the State Council, Alexander Sokolov, two sources familiar with the discussion of the issue told RBC. Prior to joining the presidential administration, Sokolov worked as the vice-governor of the Kostroma region.
On May 10, the governor of the region Igor Vasiliev announced his resignation and intention to continue working at the federal level. In total, five heads of Russian regions announced their resignation or plans to resign from office on Tuesday.
Alexander Sokolov was born in 1970 in Kostroma. Graduated from the Kostroma Pedagogical Institute named after N.A. Nekrasov with a degree in history, as well as MGIMO. Since 2005 – Chairman of the National Council of Youth and Children’s Associations of Russia. In 2014, he was appointed First Deputy Governor of the Kostroma region for internal policy, in 2017 – head of the department in the presidential administration.
Over the past day in Russia, five governors have already announced their early retirement. These are the governor of the Kirov region Igor Vasiliev, the head of Mari El Alexander Evstifeev, as well as the heads of the Tomsk, Saratov and Ryazan regions Sergey Zhvachkin, Valery Radaev and Nikolai Lyubimov.
After leaving, Vasiliev stated that he intended to continue working at the federal level. According to him, President Vladimir Putin supported the decision. “Due to the approaching end of the term of office as governor, to which you elected me, I have made an important decision to leave the post of governor of the Kirov region and continue working at the federal level,” he wrote.

In turn, Radaev said that he plans to focus “on another area of work”, without specifying which one. Zhvachkin recalled that he turned 65 not so long ago and that the law limits governors to two terms of work. Lyubimov expressed hope that he would be able to “be useful to the country in this difficult time” in a new position, without specifying which position he was talking about.
