If it is confirmed that the High Representative of the European Union for International Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrel, really called Russia “fascist”, Moscow will have “very big questions about how to continue doing business”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference (broadcast on YouTube channel of the department).

«He (Borrel. — RBC) not just did not argue with the deputy who allowed himself such impermissible statements. Mr. Borrel said, answering his question: “We do not yet have a concrete plan on how to defeat fascist Russia and the fascist regime.” That is, the goal is not in doubt, they just haven’t come up with a concrete plan yet,” the minister stressed. According to him, this is not the first time that Borrel, instead of using diplomatic methods, suggests “defeating Russia on the battlefield, then increasing arms supplies to Ukraine.”

Lavrov noted that Borrel’s office explained shortly after his statement that it was a translation error from Spanish into English. The Russian side has requested a transcript of the speech in Spanish, but has not yet received it.

“We will seek clarity, complete clarity, and if we do not receive this transcript in Spanish today, we will draw the appropriate conclusions,” the Foreign Minister promised.

Borrel made his statement at the inter-parliamentary conference in Prague. The video was published on the portal of the European Commission. During the speech, the diplomat switched to his native Spanish, after which the sound of his speech was turned off in the broadcast, a simultaneous translation track into English was launched instead. According to this translation, Borrel stated that the EU does not yet have a concrete plan on how to defeat fascist Russia and its fascist regime.

The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, said that in his own words Borrel completely reset himself as a diplomat, so now his judgments about Russia “cannot be relevant.”

The representative of the European External Relations Service, Peter Stano, explained to TASS that there was a translation error, but in fact Borrel said: “As one of the deputies said, who claimed that the goal of [the EU] is to defeat fascist Russia and its fascist regime. I was asked about it, but it’s not my task. My task is more modest:to help Ukraine together, as well as to continue discussions with our international partners and effectively apply sanctions as they were adopted.

Estonian MP Marko Mikelson, who spoke before Borrel, really said: “We are all threatened by fascist Russia, as many political analysts such as Timothy Snyder and others around the world say. And we have to fight this reality.” Between Mickelson and Borrel , there were also severalparliamentarians, and in the translation into English it is not indicated in any way that the head of EU diplomacy responds precisely to the remark of the representative of Estonia.
