The governor of the Saratov region, Valery Radaev, announced that he would resign his powers ahead of schedule and would not be nominated for a new term. He is the fourth head of the region in a day to announce his decision to resign from office.
“I have made a decision on the early resignation of the governor. I headed the Saratov Region for ten years. Due to the upcoming election campaign, I will not nominate my candidacy for the next term for election as the head of the region,” Radaev said.
The head of the region said that he plans to focus “on another area of work”, without specifying which one.
Valery Radaev has been the head of the region since 2012, and was re-elected in 2017. He was awarded the Medal of the Order “For Services to the Fatherland” of the second degree, the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honor.
Following him, the head of Mari El, Alexander Evstifeev, announced his resignation. According to him, he appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to accept his resignation due to the expiration of his term of office.
In February, RBC sources reported that Evstifeev, whose five-year term of office expires this year, does not intend to run for a second term. The sources called the reason a personal decision of the head of the region. “He categorically does not want to [continue working as governor],” one of the interlocutors clarified.

Earlier, the decision to resign was announced by the heads of the Tomsk, Kirov and Ryazan regions Sergey Zhvachkin, Igor Vasiliev and Nikolai Lyubimov, respectively.
Zhvachkin recalled that he turned 65 not so long ago and that the law limits governors to two terms of work. Vasiliev announced his intention to continue working at the federal level. Lyubimov expressed hope that he would be able to “be useful to the country in this difficult time” in a new position, without specifying which position he was talking about.
