Significant material damage from wildfires in Russia this year is already obvious. This was stated by President Vladimir Putin at a meeting on the situation with forest fires in the regions of the country, broadcast by the TV channel “Russia 24”.

“Now a number of regions are fighting fires that have arisen in populated areas. Moreover, significant material damage is already obvious. Unfortunately, there are victims among citizens,” he said.

The Head of State also suggested discussing and taking additional measures to make the situation with wildfires in the regions less acute. “I think it is necessary to set a target indicator that can be used to evaluate both the efficiency of work and a specific result, namely, the reduction of the area of forest fires for each subject of the Federation and the country as a whole,” Putin said.

According to the president, among other things, large forest fires undermine efforts to preserve the climate, so the issue is fundamental for Russia and the whole world.

Acting head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Alexander Chupriyan, speaking at the meeting, clarified that forest fires destroyed almost 1.3 thousand buildings in the Kurgan region, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Kemerovo, Irkutsk, Omsk and Novosibirsk regions, 16 people became victims, 18 more were injured. At the same time, he added that to date, fires do not threaten settlements and economic facilities, all threats have been eliminated.

In turn, the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov informed the president that the fixed area covered by fire in the forests is one and a half times less than last year. “For today’s treble, this is 270 thousand hectares against 400 thousand last year. And this is despite the fact that the Far East, the Urals and Siberia have caught fire on average for a month,” the minister noted.

Kozlov clarified that this year 14.2 billion rubles have been allocated to fight forest fires, which is 8.2 billion more than in previous years. «All federal money for fires «is colored». And if the region does not burn this year, then funds can be redistributed to other forest protection measures. For example, the overhaul of equipment”,” added the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Since the beginning of spring, forest fires have started in many regions of the country. According to the data of the Aviation Security Service, as of May 10, there were 101 forest fires on the territory of Russia on an area of 12713 hectares. The most active fires were recorded in the Krasnoyarsk Territory (23), the Amur Region (13), as well as the Khabarovsk Territory (12). The emergency mode has been introduced in two subjects of Russia to date: on the entire territory of the Kurgan region and in the Askiz municipal district of the Republic of Khakassia.

On May 8, the Federal Forestry Agency told TASS that since the beginning of the year, the fire has passed more than 251 thousand hectares of the territory of Russia, and the area of forest fires as a whole has decreased by 32.6% compared to 2021. “Since the beginning of the year and to date, the area of forest fires in the country has decreased by 32.6% compared to 2021 and amounts to 251.7 thousand hectares, of which 140.9 thousand hectares are covered with forest,” the report says.

According to the agency, the main causes of all spring forest fires are non-compliance with fire safety rules by the local population: burning of dry grass in fields, garbage in suburban areas, un extinguished fires, discarded cigarette butts and matches. Also, the reason is man-made factors— electrical closures, broken power line wires.

In 2021, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 3210 wildfires occurred in the country, their area was more than 8.5 million hectares. The main fires were recorded: in Yakutia – 1696 fires with an area of 8 million hectares, in the Irkutsk region – 590 fires with an area of 462 thousand hectares, in the Tyumen region – 686 fires with an area of almost 194 thousand hectares.

In September, the head of the forest program of the Russian branch of Greenpeace, Alexey Yaroshenko, said that 2021 was a record year for the total area of forest fires in Russia since the beginning of the XXI century. According to him, last year the fire damaged 18.1 million hectares.
