In mid-April, Lukashenko said that an assassination attempt was being prepared on him and his sons. According to the Belarusian leader, the coup was being prepared with the participation of foreign intelligence services, including the United States. The State Department rejected the accusations of involvement in the upcoming assassination attempt.

The Belarusian KGB announced the initiation of the first case in the history of the republic on an attempt to seize power in April last year. Employees of the department together with the Russian FSB detained Zenkovich and Feduta in Moscow on April 17, where they met with some generals of the Belarusian armed forces. The attempt was planned for May 9.

According to the FSB, the accused brought to the meeting a list of names of people who were planned to be eliminated or imprisoned, and they received information about high-ranking officials from hackers. The Russian special service shared footage of the operational shooting of the detention, in which Zenkovich outlines an action plan: kill the “chief”, block the military and riot police, seize the radio station and TV channel to spread the appeal. He noted that Minsk should be blocked so that it would not be possible to bring external troops into the city.

Zenkovich and Feduta stated that they need at least five years to transform society and the state. According to them, after the coup, Belarus should become an incubator for “growing democracy” according to the experience of Poland. “Because if elections are held now, then Lukashenka will be chosen instead of Lukashenka. And it will be the same for another 25 years,” Zenkovich noted. The generals with whom the accused met were asked to appropriate Lukashenka’s property.

The trial in the case of a “conspiracy to seize power” in Belarus began on July 29 of this year. Within its framework, the former editor-in-chief of the opposition Belarusian Telegram channel Nexta (recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in the republic) testified Roman Protasevich. He said that he was a “transfer link” between the “conspirators” and the headquarters of the former rival of President Alexander Lukashenkoin the election of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. According to Protasevich, since “marches and walks have already failed”, the accused “saw one option of overthrowing the government”by force with the participation of the military”.

During the trial, Zenkovich, Golubovich and Kravchuk fully admitted guilt, Feduta partially. Kostusev pleaded not guilty.
