There are over 600 LPR servicemen in Ukrainian captivity, but the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) does not provide accurate data, Leonid Pasechnik, the acting head of the republic, said in an interview with Izvestia.

“We can only talk about the number of servicemen held captive by the VFU (Ukrainian armed formations) according to our lists, which were formed on the basis of statements by their relatives. At the moment, this is 640 applications,” the head of the region said.

Pasechnik noted that the authorities are making every effort to release every soldier, but the process is difficult due to the inconsistent position of the Ukrainian side, which has repeatedly disrupted agreements.

According to him, soldiers in Ukrainian captivity, in addition to moral humiliation, are subjected to physical violence, torture and beatings. In addition, the human rights defenders of the LPR revealed facts of false information about the causes of death of prisoners held in Ukraine, but the ICRC ignored this because of its “political bias”, said Pasechnik.

“The Luhansk People’s Republic has repeatedly drawn attention to the violation by Ukrainian nationalists of the norms of international humanitarian law, including with regard to prisoners of war,” he stressed.

The LPR, as well as the DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, were incorporated into Russia by decree of President Vladimir Putin on October 5. The acting head of the LPR was a beekeeper who led the region since November 2017.

After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the parties repeatedly reported on the exchange of prisoners of war. The previous exchange of prisoners took place on November 10 according to the formula “35 to 35”, the Beekeeper reported. “35 servicemen of the People’s Militia of the LPR returned home from Ukrainian captivity,” he wrote then. A few days later, the exchange was confirmed by the Ukrainian side.

Before that, in early November, the Russian Defense Ministry announced an exchange according to the formula “107 to 107”. The Russian military were taken to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation. “All those released are provided with the necessary medical and psychological assistance,” the department added at the time.

At the same time, the Ministry of Defense does not provide official data on how many Russian military remain in Ukrainian captivity.
