Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed prosecutors and investigative bodies to prepare an evidence base on the crimes of “nationalists” in Ukraine for the courts, including at the international level. He announced this at a meeting of the Board of the Prosecutor General’s Office, broadcast by the TV channel “Russia 24”.

“I ask the Investigative Committee of Russia, all investigative bodies to record such crimes in detail, identify their organizers and perpetrators, initiate and bring criminal cases to their logical conclusion, to court,” Putin said.

He noted that such evidence base should be accumulated for all crimes of “neo-Nazis and their accomplices, starting with the coup d’etat in Kiev in 2014.”

On March 1, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague also announced its intention to investigate war crimes in Ukraine. The Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan, said that he had studied the available data and “was convinced that there were weighty grounds for launching an investigation.” He stated that there is information about war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine since the end of 2013. Khan is also going to investigate new alleged crimes falling under the jurisdiction of the court, “committed by any party to the conflict on the territory of Ukraine.”

On March 25, the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, announced the initiation of more than 500 criminal cases on the events in Ukraine and in the Donbass over the past eight years. Among the defendants (180 people in total) he named some Ukrainian politicians, military, members of nationalist organizations.

At the beginning of April, at a meeting in Donetsk, the head of the IC stated that since the beginning of 2022, the IC, together with the prosecutors General of the republics of Donbass, had opened 146 cases “on crimes of representatives of the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine”. In the proceedings of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Donetsk People’s Republic there are more than 3 thousand such criminal cases, in the Luhansk People’s Republic there are also more than 3 thousand cases.

Prior to that, Alexander Bastrykin supported the idea of the leadership of the LNR on the tribunal for the “war crimes of the Ukrainian regime”. The Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic, Victoria Serdyukova, said that the authorities had been collecting evidence of such crimes for eight years.

In addition, Bastrykin instructed to investigate crimes against Russian prisoners of war and civilians of Ukraine, about the use of prohibited ammunition by the Ukrainian military in the Donbass, about the alleged development of biological weapons in Ukrainian laboratories, etc.
