The government of Peru has declared a state of emergency in some regions of the country, including in the capital Lima, because of the protests since January 15, LaRepublica newspaper writes. A special regime has been introduced for 30 days.

“Declare from January 15, 2023, for a period of 30 calendar days, a state of emergency in the regions of Puno, Cusco, Lima, Callao, in the province of Andahuailas of the Apurimac region, the provinces of Tambopata and Tauamanu of the Madre de Dios region, as well as in the city of Torata of the province of Mariscal Nieto of the Moquegua region,”mdash; the decree says.

The internal order will be maintained by the National Police of Peru and the armed forces.

The decree also applies to five highways, including the Southern and Northern Pan-American Highways. In addition, Puno residents are forbidden to leave the house from 20:00 to 4:00. The ban is valid for ten days.

Protests in Puno, Arequipa, Cusco and other regions in the south of the country began in December 2022, after Dina Boluarte came to power after the resignation of President Pedro Castillo. Castillo was impeached in response to his decision to dissolve Congress and declare a state of emergency. The ousted leader was accused of an attempted coup, hearrested. Castillo’s supporters are demanding early elections, the dissolution of parliament and the resignation of Boluarte. On January 9, as a result of clashes with security forces in Hulyak (Puno region), 18 protesters and one policeman were killed.
