The highest value is life. <...> And then we have borrowings from Western European philosophy: «dignity », «human rights and freedoms ». All this is good, no one now denies either the rights or the dignity of a person, but is it possible to put it right after “life”?»— the patriarch asked.
According to the patriarch, the concepts from the strategy contain “humanistic ideas that arose quite late in the context of primarily Western European development”. «And what about these humanistic ideas <...> there were no values? And faith, and love for the fatherland, and sacrifice, without which our history is unthinkable at all? She and ourwell-being is built, among other things, on the sacrifices of previous generations. For those who died during the war, defending their homeland, for those who worked desperately in the most difficult conditions, developing the economy of our country, and after all, there were also victims. <...> How can I not say about love for the fatherland, about loyalty, about duty, about sacrifice?»— the patriarch spoke out. According to the head of the ROC, these “eternal values” are not conditioned by the political context, and their list can be expanded further. Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a new version of the Russian National Security Strategy in July 2021. In it, the preservation of the people of Russia is indicated as the main priority. The protection of traditional values is called a strategic priority of the country, and their strengthening is attributed to the number of national interests. The concept of “fundamental values” is given there with reference to the Russian Constitution. In the Constitution, a person, his rights and freedoms are called the highest value (Article 2). The National Security Strategy also states that “traditional Russian spiritual, moral, cultural and historical values are being actively attacked by the United States and its allies, as well as by transnational corporations, foreign non-profit non-governmental, religious, extremist and terrorist organizations.” Traditional values, according to the strategy (paragraph 91), are considered life, dignity, human rights and freedoms, patriotism, service to the Fatherland, responsibility for its fate, a strong family, creative work, the priority of the spiritual over the material, and others.
