Employees of the US Department of Justice during searches at the home of President Joe Biden in Wilmington (Delaware) found a new batch of secret documents, his lawyer Rob Bauer told reporters. This is reported by CNBC.

The search took place on Friday, January 20, it lasted 12 hours. In total, six documents were found marked “confidential” and “related materials”. According to Bauer, one part refers to the period when Biden was a senator (he represented Delaware from 1973 to 2009), the other – vice president (from 2009 to 2017).

Also, the lawyer said, Justice Department officials took away several handwritten notes made during Biden’s tenure as vice president.

Bauer clarified that access to Biden’s private residence was provided at the suggestion of the president’s team in order to move the process as quickly as possible, the ministry asked that lawyers not announce investigative actions in advance. According to Special adviser to the US President Richard Sauber, the head of state and First Lady Jill Biden were not present during the searches, it was conducted with lawyers and representatives of the White House.

This is the third batch of secret documents that investigators have found. The first was discovered in November 2022 at the Penn Biden Center. Among the papers were American intelligence reports and briefing materials related to Ukraine, Iran and the UK. The American leader expressed surprise that they were found there. The second batch was found in a warehouse in the garage of Biden’s house in Delaware, as well as in one of the rooms.

Biden himself said that all the papers found in his possession “were immediately transferred to the archive and the Ministry of Justice”, and he “fully cooperates and looks forward to the opportunity to quickly solve this problem”.

The new head of the German Defense Ministry decided to create the strongest army in Europe

The new head of the German Defense Ministry decided to create the strongest army in Europe

Boris Pistorius

The German authorities are striving to make the Bundeswehr the strongest army in the European Union, the new head of the German Defense Ministry BorisPistorius said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.

“Germany is the largest economy in Europe, so our goal should also be to create the strongest and best equipped army in the EU,” he said. According to the Minister, it will take several years to complete this task, and now his job is to “chart a course to a turning point in order to succeed”.

Answering the question about what the Bundeswehr needs most, Pistorius said: “Now everything has to happen at the same time: the purchase of weapons and equipment, the modernization of barracks, the recruitment of personnel.”

Pistorius is 62 years old, he was appointed German Defense Minister on January 17. The official has been a member of the Social Democratic Party headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz since 2013, and then became the Minister of the Interior of the state of Lower Saxony. In 1980-1981, he served in the military. Scholz called Pistorius “exactly the right person for the Bundeswehr.”

From December 2021 to mid-January 2022, Kristine Lambrecht held the post of head of the German Defense Ministry. She explained her resignation by the increased media attention to her and her actions, which prevented her from properly covering and discussing the situation of soldiers, the Bundeswehr and the course of security policy in the interests of German citizens. This was preceded byseveral media scandals. One of them was caused by the Minister’s New Year’s address, in which, speaking against the background of fireworks, she said that because of the situation in Ukraine, where fighting has been going on for almost 11 months, she received “a lot of special impressions”. Lambrecht was also criticized for its “sluggish policy” regarding Bundeswehr equipment.

In December, Spiegel, citing a confidential report for the defense committee, reported that Albrecht recognized the country’s inability to fully fulfill its obligations under NATO. The document stated that there were problems with the deployment of the NATO rapid Reaction force by the Bundeswehr in 2023. Scholz denied this: “The Bundeswehr is effective, he has proven this many times, and any other statement will not be fair to the activities of our soldiers.”

Supplies of foreign weapons to Ukraine

NATO countries and their allies have been increasing arms supplies to Kiev since the beginning of the special operation. If initially we were talking about helmets, bulletproof vests, unmanned aerial vehicles (Turkish Bayraktar), then they began to send old Soviet weapons to Ukraine, which were still stored in warehouses in Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic.

Over time, Ukraine began to supply weapons that were produced in NATO countries and Australia. It was about armored vehicles (British Saxon, Australian Bushmaster), anti-tank complexes (Javelin, NLAW), artillery installations (French Caesar, American HIMARS).

You can read more about military supplies to Ukraine here.

What sanctions have been imposed against Russia

Packages of sanctions against Russia began to be introduced even before the start of the special operation in Ukraine, after the recognition of the DPR and LPR. The restrictions were announced by the USA, Canada, the EU, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Switzerland, Iceland and a number of other countries.

There were six waves of sanctions in total. The United States, the United Kingdom, and the EU stated that they were coordinating efforts to weaken the Russian economy, but restrictions were not always imposed synchronously. There were also certain differences, which in the West were explained by the unwillingness to harm their own economies. There were also differences in personal sanctions. For example, the United States imposed restrictions on 663 people, and the United Kingdom imposed restrictions on more than 1,000 businessmen, politicians, military personnel, media employees, people who were considered close to Putin in London.

The first The wave concerned banks financing the military industry, State Duma deputies who supported the recognition of the DPR and LPR. VEB, which is the lender of many companies, the operator of national projects, the curator of other development institutions and the manager of pension savings of almost 40 million Russians, also came under sanctions.

The second wave of sanctions it began after the start of the special operation. The UK has imposed restrictions on 100 individuals and companies, including VTB, Rostec and Aeroflot. The amounts of deposits and deposits for Russian citizens in UK banks were limited to 50 thousand US dollars. All transactions with new debt obligations with a maturity of more than 14 days were limited to a number of companies (including Gazprom, Russian Railways, Alfa-Bank). Personal sanctions affected Vladimir Putin, Sergey Lavrov, Sergei Shoigu.

The EU has imposed restrictions, including against Russian Railways, Uralvagonzavod, KAMAZ, Alfa-Bank, Otkritie, Bank of Russia and Promsvyazbank. Arestovich questioned the guaranteed victory of Ukraine

Ecs-adviser to the office of the president Arestovich doubted the guaranteed victory of Ukraine According to Arestovich, who on January 17 ceased to be an adviser to the office of the Ukrainian president, Ukrainians become “victorious” when they start “bickering with each other”

Arestovich doubted the guaranteed victory of Ukraine

Alexey Arestovich

Former adviser to the office of the President of Ukraine Alexey Arestovich said that Kiev could lose in a special military operation launched by Russia. He stated this in an interview with journalist and political scientist Yuri Romanenko, it was published on Arestovich’s YouTube channel.

He recalled the words of Polish President Andrzej Duda, said in Davos, that the near future could be decisive for the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, Duda said that “Russia has not yet been defeated”, he expressed fears that Moscow is preparing a “new offensive” in the coming months, the Polish News Agency reports. During this period, the question will arise whether Ukraine will survive or not, Duda noted.

“We are inside a very clear special operation of the Russians against us.”..> And the Polish president says that now are crucial months in Ukraine, it is unknown what will happen, because they understand what is being planned. Gerasimov was put <...>»,— said Arestovich.

He was referring to the appointment of Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov as commander of the joint group of troops in Ukraine on January 11. The Defense Ministry explained this by expanding the scale of the tasks being solved during its implementation, military experts interviewed by The Wall Street Journal noted that a reshuffle in command could mean a new offensive in Ukraine.

“Let’s not giggle at the bad Russians, and rejoice that we are invincible, I remind you, we are invincible as long as we what? Until we started fighting with each other. When we started fighting with each other, we are very victorious, victorious in the shortest possible time, and unexpectedly for ourselves,” he continued.

«And if everyone thinks— I am now an unofficial person already, I can say whatever I want, if everyone thinks that we are guaranteed to win the war, then it is very different. Since the 14th, it has already ceased to be like this, very much,” Arestovich concluded.

On January 12, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the capture of Soledar near Artemivsk in the DPR (Ukrainian name Bakhmut). Later, several more settlements in the area were taken under control.

President Vladimir Putin noted that Russia’s victory in the fighting is inevitable. In his opinion, this is based on the “unity and cohesion of the Russian and multinational Russian people in general, this is the courage and heroism of our fighters in the framework of a special military operation and on the front line and, of course, the work of the military-industrial complex”.

Sandu allowed Moldova to become “part of a large alliance”

Withandu did not rule out a revision of Moldova’s neutrality and joining the military bloc In the country are discussing the possibility of amending the Constitution, which enshrines its neutral status, follows from the words of Sandu

Sandu allowed Moldova to become part of a large alliance

Moldova, in connection with the military actions in Ukraine, is considering the possibility of reconsidering the issue of its neutrality and joining the military bloc. This was stated by the President of the Republic Maya Sandu in an interview with Politico.

Answering the question about the country’s possible accession to NATO, Sandu said that Chisinau is still considering its next step, as well as the need for amendments to the Constitution.

“Now there is a serious discussion about our ability to defend ourselves, can we do it ourselves or should we become part of a larger alliance,” the Moldovan leader said. “And if at some point we, as a nation, come to the conclusion that we need to change our neutral status, this should happen through a democratic process,” she noted.

The neutral status of the Republic is enshrined in its Basic Law. According to Article 11Moldavia proclaims its permanent neutrality and does not allow the deployment of the armed forces of other states. In the spring of 2016, the Moldovan Parliament adopted a declaration “On the principle of the inviolability of the sovereignty, independence and permanent neutrality of the Republic of Moldova”. The document declares that the permanent neutrality of the country is not only a manifestation ofthe peaceful and friendly nature of the existence and development of the state, but also a conscious necessity, a guarantee of the preservation of peace and stability both within the Republic of Moldova and in the region as a whole. At the same time, challenging this status or an attempt to abolish it cannot be regarded otherwise than as a direct attack on the Constitution, on peace and tranquility in the country and on the security of its citizens. Russia was interested in Moldova’s extra-territorial status.

As Politico notes, in her response, Sandu tried not to mention NATO because of Moscow’s warning against further military cooperation between Chisinau and Western countries.

At the end of December, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Mikhail Galuzin in an interview with RIA Novosti warned that the intensification of cooperation between Chisinau and NATO countries in the military and military-technical spheres…> to a greater extent undermines the security of Moldova itself.». According to him, “reckless pumping” of eitheranother state with Western weapons or the deployment of NATO forces there “brings us closer to a catastrophe”. As an example, he cited the “sad experience of Ukraine”. In Chisinau, in response, they reminded that Moldova is a peaceful and neutral state and that neutrality does not mean self-isolation, demilitarization and indifference to what is happening in the world.

The Baltic states called on Germany to immediately give tanks to Ukraine

EEstonia, Latvia and Lithuania called on Germany to urgently transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine Berlin bears a special responsibility for helping Ukraine, it is obliged to transfer the tanks requested by Kiev as soon as possible, the foreign ministers of the three countries said. The German authorities explained that they could not send tanks before the United States

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania called on Germany to urgently transfer Leopard tanks of its own production to Ukraine, such messages were published on Twitter by the heads of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of these countries Urmas Reinsalu, Edgar Rinkevich and Gabrielius Landsbergis.

“This is necessary to stop Russian aggression, help Ukraine and quickly restore peace in Europe. Germany, as a leading European power, has a special responsibility in this regard,” the ministers’ messages say.

The Ukrainian authorities asked Germany to provide Leopard, but the German authorities, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung and The Wall Street Journal, refuse to transfer tanks before the US takes a similar step. Berlin explained that the delivery interferes with Germany’s past, and Washington’s actions have made Berlin’s situation easier.

The White House believes that Germany has put the United States in a difficult position with such a condition, since American Abrams tanks are more difficult to operate and consume more fuel than their European counterparts, they will not be able to transfer them in the near future if such a decision is made. A source of the Financial Times in diplomatic circles noted that the position of Germany irritated half of Western countries.

The German Defense Ministry then announced its intention to find out how many Leopard tanks can be transferred to Ukraine if approval is still received. This, however, provoked criticism in the Bundestag. The head of the defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman, considered it an alarming sign that the ministry engaged in such a check only after 11 months of fighting in Ukraine and only after the appointment of a new defense minister.

The representative of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov urged not to exaggerate the possible impact of the tanks transferred to Kiev on the course of the conflict.

Medvedev called the fighting in Ukraine a “new Patriotic War”

Medvedev — Borrel: the fighting in Ukraine is a “new Patriotic war”, as in 1812 and 1945, the Head of European diplomacy Borrel recalled Russia’s victory over Napoleon and Hitler, pointing out that Moscow is used to “fight to the end.” Medvedev, in response, urged to consider Europeans and “ukronazists” the heirs of those opponents

Medvedev called the fighting in Ukraine

The fighting in Ukraine is a “new Patriotic War” in which Russian troops will win “as in 1812 and 1945,” Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, former President Dmitry Medvedev, said in a telegram channel.

“Well done, after all, this Borrel with an extinct face. I remembered that our country defeated Napoleon and Hitler. Note that he drew the analogy himself. Accordingly, the Ukronazis and Western Europe are the direct heirs of those who fought with Russia. And the war, therefore, is a new Domestic one with them,” he wrote.

This is how Medvedev reacted to the words of the deputy head of the European Commission, Josep Borrel, who recalled the war of the Russian Empire and the USSR with Napoleonic France and Nazi Germany in the XIX and XX centuries. “Russia is a great country, a great nation that is used to fighting to the end,” he stressed and assured that Moscow has “huge forces and the ability to continue.” Borrel called for tanks and other heavy weapons to be given to Kiev in these conditions: “Ukraine needs to be provided with the necessary weapons not only to fight back, as they do, but also to return the lands.”

The Russian authorities criticize the supply of weapons by Western states to Ukraine. “Great Britain, other European countries, Poland, etc., which are now talking about their intentions to arrange a new round of supplies of new, more technologically advanced military equipment for Ukraine, are not able to change the situation on the spot,” Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, said..
