The German authorities are striving to make the Bundeswehr the strongest army in the European Union, the new head of the German Defense Ministry BorisPistorius said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.
“Germany is the largest economy in Europe, so our goal should also be to create the strongest and best equipped army in the EU,” he said. According to the Minister, it will take several years to complete this task, and now his job is to “chart a course to a turning point in order to succeed”.
Answering the question about what the Bundeswehr needs most, Pistorius said: “Now everything has to happen at the same time: the purchase of weapons and equipment, the modernization of barracks, the recruitment of personnel.”
Pistorius is 62 years old, he was appointed German Defense Minister on January 17. The official has been a member of the Social Democratic Party headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz since 2013, and then became the Minister of the Interior of the state of Lower Saxony. In 1980-1981, he served in the military. Scholz called Pistorius “exactly the right person for the Bundeswehr.”

In December, Spiegel, citing a confidential report for the defense committee, reported that Albrecht recognized the country’s inability to fully fulfill its obligations under NATO. The document stated that there were problems with the deployment of the NATO rapid Reaction force by the Bundeswehr in 2023. Scholz denied this: “The Bundeswehr is effective, he has proven this many times, and any other statement will not be fair to the activities of our soldiers.”
