Liz Truss

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev on Twitter reacted to the decision of Prime Minister Liz Truss to resign with the words “Bye-bye, Liz Truss, congratulations lettuce” (Bye, bye Liz Truss, congratulations to lettuce). The entry was made in Medvedev’s English-language account, and his Russian-language page has not been updated since August 9.

Medvedev’s words are a reference to the action of the Daily Star tabloid. The publication a few days ago launched an online broadcast called “Can the Tracks last longer than lettuce?». The video showed an image of a table on which there was a photo of the Prime Minister and a head of lettuce. The organizers claimed they wanted to find out if Truss would retire before the salad went bad.

According to Reuters, the organizers were inspired by a column in The Economist magazine, in which the term of Truss’s rule until the moment when she “blew up her own government” with tax reform is compared with the shelf life of lettuce.

Truss announced her decision to resign on October 20, the 45th day of her tenure as Prime Minister. She admitted mistakes in economic policy and stated that she “could not justify the mandate of trust, thanks to which she was elected by the Conservative Party.” Earlier, the prime minister was criticized for tax initiatives, she had to abandon such plans and dismiss the head of the Ministry of Finance.

Truss will remain the head of the British government until the end of the election of a new prime minister. According to Graham Brady, the head of the 1922 Committee (the so-called parliamentary group of conservatives who did not get into the government, left the government or recently joined the party), the voting process will end on October 28, and the new prime minister will be appointed on October 31.
