«Media zone» reported the loss of more than 70% of subscribers due to sanctions

“The media zone” (included by the Ministry of Justice in the list of foreign media agents) lost more than 70% of subscribers from whom it received regular donations due to sanctions, the editor-in-chief of the publication Sergey Smirnov said in his Telegram channel (included by the Ministry of Justice in the list of individuals recognized as foreign media agents).

“Because of the sanctions, we lost much more than 70% of subscribers,” what to hide now, we did not collect most of the money through Russian crowdfunding systems,” Smirnov wrote.

He said that earlier the publication had almost 10 thousand subscribers who transferred money monthly. Now, according to Smirnov, “the numbers are sad.” “When you get used to such support from subscribers, it’s not easy to rebuild the financial model,” the editor-in-chief of the publication noted.

The media zone was not recognized as extremists or undesirable organizations, so subscribers with Russian cards formally risk nothing by transferring funds to the publication, Smirnov wrote. “But we can be declared anyone at any moment, so we are being overly cautious in advance. And at the first alarming moment, we will disable small Russian payments,” he added.

According to Smirnov, the publication’s hope remains only for readers who have left Russia and those who have foreign cards.

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed sanctions against Russia, which affected the largest Russian banks – Sberbank, VTB, Otkritie, Alfa-Bank, Promsvyazbank and others. In addition, Visa and Mastercard have left Russia. The cards of these payment systems issued by Russian banks have stopped working abroad since March, they cannot be used to pay for foreign services or purchases.
