The explosion occurred in the morning at the entrance to the consular section of the diplomatic mission. The explosive device, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, was triggered by an unknown militant. The TOLO News TV channel, citing the police, clarified that the suicide bomber wanted to arrange a self-detonation among the people gathered at the embassy (a source of the Russian state agency “RIA Novosti” said that at that moment the diplomat came out to announce the names of applicants for a visa). The security forces stopped him, and at that moment an explosion occurred.

Subsequently, it became known that two employees of the Russian Embassy were killed as a result – a security guard and a diplomat. Al Jazeera TV channel, citing a source in the Afghan security service, reported that a total of eight people were killed and 15 people were injured. The interlocutor of RIA Novosti said that from 15 to 20 people were killed or injured. Al Arabiya TV channel reported ten victims.

The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov called the incident a terrorist attack and strongly condemned such actions.

This is the first attack on the Russian embassy in Afghanistan since the Taliban movement came to power (recognized as terrorist in Russia and banned). It stated that it guarantees the security of the Russian diplomatic mission. After the explosion, the Taliban promised to find and punish the perpetrators.
