Gorbachev was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow

The last leader of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery, the funeral was held with the participation of the honor guard company, TASS reported.

The farewell ceremony with the first and only president of the USSR was held in the Hall of Columns of the House of Unions. Before Gorbachev’s coffin was taken out of the hall, it was covered with the national flag, as it was at the funeral of the first president of Russia Boris Yeltsin in 2007.

Upon arrival at the cemetery, the coffin was carried to the burial place, accompanied by an honor guard and lowered into the grave to the sounds of the national anthem and a triple salute, Interfax reports.

The farewell ceremony was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Yevgeny Primakov, singer Alla Pugacheva, journalist and Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov, journalist Vladimir Pozner, ambassadors of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and other European countries, as well as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin sent wreaths to the House of Unions, reports TASS. The head of state did not attend the ceremony, the Kremlin explained this by Putin’s schedule. On September 1, he said goodbye to Gorbachev in the hospital.

The former president of the USSR died on the evening of August 30 in Moscow at the age of 91. The Central Clinical Hospital reported that he was seriously ill for a long time. Recently, he suffered from kidney disease, this was discussed at the beginning of the summer at the Gorbachev Foundation.

In addition to Russian statesmen, foreign officials expressed their condolences over Gorbachev’s death, for example, US President Joe Biden, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, European Commission Head Ursula von der Leyen and others.
