John Sullivan left the post of US ambassador to Russia due to his wife’s illness. He told this to the Politico journalist Nahal Tusi, and he wrote it on Twitter.

Tusi explained that Sullivan’s wife Grace Rodriguez had cancer. She has been ill for a long time, and over the past week her condition has deteriorated sharply. On September 5, Rodriguez died.

In a conversation with a journalist, the diplomat stressed that his decision to leave had nothing to do with either the Russian military operation in Ukraine or the policy of the administration of US President Joe Biden.

Sullivan left Moscow on September 4. The American embassy said that after leaving, he will finish a forty-year career in public service.

The diplomat has been the US ambassador to Moscow since December 2019. After Sullivan’s departure, the State Department said that it is now extremely important to maintain diplomatic contacts with Russia. The representative of the ministry explained that the departure of the ambassador was part of a routine diplomatic rotation and that the candidacy of a successor would be announced in the near future. Until then, the American diplomatic mission will be headed by Deputy Ambassador Elizabeth Rood.

At the end of March, after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Sullivan said that the US administration was not going to close the embassy and recall it to Washington. The ambassador, however, did not rule out that the United States and Russia could close their diplomatic missions against the background of worsening relations, although this would be a big mistake. The Russian Foreign Ministry in August did not rule out the possibility of severing relations with the United States if they recognize Moscow as a “country” sponsor of terrorism.
