One of the power units of the Zaporozhye NPP is operating at 80% after the shelling from Ukraine, the station is operating normally, the radioactive background is in order, said the head of the civil-military administration (CAA) of the Zaporozhye region Yevgeny Balitsky on the TV channel “Russia 24”.

He stressed that all “arrivals” fell on the territory near the station, but there were no direct hits, and there were also no casualties as a result of the incident. Balitsky noted that the chemical and radioactive protection forces at the nuclear power plant are in full readiness in case of an emergency.

According to him, the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency working at the plant at the moment were in a bomb shelter during the shelling.

Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Main Council of the regional CAA, clarified that the artillery strikes fell on the special corps of the nuclear power plant, the communication overlap near it and the concrete fence. The Russian military took control of the NPP at the end of February, but formally the largest nuclear power plant in Europe is still under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Energoatom. In July and August, Kiev and Moscow repeatedly accused each other of shelling the power plant. The Ukrainian authorities and the G7 countries called on Russian troops to leave the nuclear power plant. Moscow claims that it does not use the station for military purposes, and believes that the creation of a demilitarized zone in this area will make the station even more vulnerable to provocations from Kiev.

On September 1, a group of IAEA experts arrived at the NPP. On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the landing of Ukrainian troops on the coast of the Kakhovsky reservoir near the nuclear power plant, as well as the shelling of the station’s territory. Two days later, the agency reported another attempt by the AFU to land troops and seize the NPP.

The IAEA experts found that the physical integrity of the facility had been violated more than once, and saw traces of shelling. On September 5, the agency’s specialists left the station, leaving two representatives on a permanent basis. A detailed report on the situation at the NPP is planned to be published next week after the visit. A meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation at the station will be held on September 6.
