US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin ordered to leave the American carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman in the Mediterranean Sea because of the situation around Ukraine, the Associated Press reports, citing a Pentagon spokesman. According to the agency, this happened “amid concerns about the accumulation of thousands of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine”.

The aircraft carrier as part of a strike group of five US Navy ships was supposed to head to the Middle East, however, according to a Defense Ministry spokesman, plans have changed. “This is necessary in order to reassure US allies and partners in the region,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

The information is confirmed by the USNI News publication. A Pentagon spokesman said that the carrier group will remain in the Ionian Sea between Greece and Italy for the time being, instead of heading to the area of operation of the US Central Command through the Suez Canal.

According to the interlocutor of the publication, such a decision should “convince European allies of the US commitment to regional security”.

In addition to the aircraft carrier Harry S. Thimap, the group includes the missile cruiser San Jacinto, the destroyers USS Bainbridge, USS Cole, USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham, as well as the Norwegian frigate Fridtjof.

In the fall, Western media, including Politico, Bild, the Washington Post and others, began to publish information about the impending “invasion” of Russia into Ukraine. During the online summit of the Presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, the latter announced the threatening nature of the movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders.

The Kremlin has repeatedly stressed that Russia has no “aggressive plans” towards other countries, and the movement of troops inside the borders is an internal matter. At the same time, they drew attention to the increased activity of NATO at the Russian borders. Despite this, the leaders of Western countries began to warn Russia about sanctions.
