US Permanent Representative to the OSCE Michael Carpenter, after talks with Russia in Vienna on security guarantees, warned that Europe should prepare for a possible escalation, his words are quoted by Reuters.

“We are now facing a crisis of European security. The drumbeat of war is loud, and the rhetoric has tightened,” he said.

At the same time, the diplomat noted that Washington prefers the path of dialogue and de-escalation. According to him, the United States will not allow the expansion of spheres of influence or restrictions on the right of countries to choose their own unions.

Earlier, the OSCE Chairman, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said that the risk of war in Europe is higher than ever. According to him, over the past few weeks, the region has faced a military escalation in Eastern Europe. He mentioned tensions in Ukraine, conflicts in Georgia, Armenia and Moldova.

The Permanent Representative of Russia to the OSCE, Alexander Lukashevich, after the meeting in Vienna, in turn, warned that if Russia and the West could not agree, it could lead to disastrous consequences. Until Moscow received an adequate response to its proposals, “everything revolved around their [Western] concerns, Russia’s allegedly aggressive behavior,” he noted.

The talks in Vienna were the third in a series of consultations between Russia and the West on security. The first two meetings in Geneva and Brussels did not yield results. Moscow has failed to get the West to fulfill the main requirement of not moving the alliance to the east and refusing to accept Ukraine and Georgia into the bloc, which Washington objects to. Western countries have made it clear that they do not intend to restrict the right of other states to join the alliance.

Moscow called the negotiations unsuccessful and expects a written response from the United States and NATO to its proposals.
