Due to the shortage of gas between European countries, a “war over its distribution” may arise, Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, said in an interview with NOZ.

“There are likely to be serious conflicts of distribution [of gas] within the EU,” as in 2015 and 2016, when there was a refugee crisis,” Merz said (quoted by Welt).

According to the politician, German Minister of Economy and Climate Robert Habeck needs to draw up a gas distribution schedule agreed with the EU countries.

At the same time, Merz urged not to make public statements, after which Russia may stop gas supplies to Europe. “If Russia behaves in accordance with the contract, supplies will resume after repairs,” the head of the CDU claims.

On July 11, Russia will suspend gas pumping through the Nord Stream pipeline. It will be closed for almost two weeks for routine prevention, until July 21. The operator of the Nord Stream AG gas pipeline said that the schedule and work plan were agreed in advance with the company’s partners for transporting gas upstream and downstream.

However, the German authorities fear that the Russian side will then stop supplying gas to Germany. In particular, this opinion was expressed by the Minister of Economy. The head of the Federal Grid Agency of Germany, Klaus Muller, said that the regulator is considering different options, most of them are “unpleasant” and provide for a shortage of gas in winter.

The Kremlin claimed that Moscow strictly fulfills its obligations to supply fuel. “Russia is very, very careful about its reputation, the reputation of a responsible supplier,” said Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president.

In mid-June, Gazprom reduced the volume of pumping through the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany, first from 167 million to 100 million, and then to 67 million cubic meters. m per day. It linked this to the “untimely return by Siemens of gas pumping units from repair”. Siemens itself, in turn, explained that the turbines for the Nord Stream are produced by Canada, one of the engines is under repair in Montreal, and a return is impossible due to Canadian sanctions.

Later, Siemens, speaking about the reduction of gas supplies to Germany, said that this was due to politics, and not to the engines for the gas pipeline. The Russian Foreign Ministry denied the political motives for the suspension of supplies.
