The Kremlin called the US decision on the summit without Russia

Dmitry Peskov

Moscow has a negative attitude to the US plans to hold a “Summit for Democracy” and sees this as an attempt to draw new dividing conclusions, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“We fought-fought in the early 1990s to reduce and remove dividing lines, but now the United States prefers to create new dividing lines and divide countries into good, in their view, and bad, too, in their view,” TASS quotes him.

Washington is trying to impose its idea of democracy on other countries, Peskov continued. “They are trying to privatize the word ‘democracy’. That is, [in their view] democracy is only what corresponds to the understanding of Washington. Obviously, this cannot and should not be the case. This, in fact, does not exist,” Vladimir Putin’s press secretary said.

Last night, the White House website published a list of countries that the US authorities invited to the upcoming Summit for Democracy in December. There are 110 countries in the list. But among them there are no, in particular, Russia, China and Turkey.

From the countries of the former USSR, the Baltic countries, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Ukraine received an invitation to the summit.

Among the participants of the future summit are Papua New Guinea, Botswana, Kiribati, Micronesia, Nauru, Vanuatu, Kosovo.

The US State Department said in a statement that the summit on December 9–10 will provide an opportunity to hear a wide range of opinions about the renewal of democracy around the world. The main topics of the meeting were protection from authoritarianism, the fight against corruption, and the protection of human rights.

In addition to official envoys from different countries, representatives of civil society and the private sector will also attend the summit.
