It was difficult for the staff of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to get to the Zaporozhye NPP, but upon arrival at the station they were able to conduct an initial assessment and see the professional work of the staff. This was stated by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.

“Yes, it [getting to the nuclear power plant] was not easy. But it is important that we have arrived. <...> For me, the work starts now. We conducted an initial assessment. We see the dedicated work of the staff and management of the station. Despite the difficult situation and circumstances, they do their job very professionally,” the head of the organization told reporters (quoted by TASS).

According to Grossi, the IAEA mission saw key things in a couple of hours that it wanted to look at. He added that the inspection participants will remain in the city and plan to meet with residents of Energodar.

The IAEA delegation led by Grossi arrived at the station around 14:00 on September 1 and stayed there for several hours. Two days earlier, representatives of the agency met with President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev.

The visit of the IAEA delegation is connected with reports of ongoing strikes on nuclear power plants. The Russian Defense Ministry claims that the Ukrainian side has been shelling the station since mid-July. Moscow rejects Kiev’s accusations of placing heavy weapons at the nuclear power plant.

Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant by installed capacity and the third largest in the world, located on the banks of the Dnieper River in the city of Energodar. It accounts for six of the 15 operating nuclear power units in Ukraine. Since the end of February, the NPP has been under the control of Russian forces, but formally remains under the control of Energoatom.

Over the past week, the civil-military administration of the Zaporozhye region has repeatedly reported attacks on nuclear power plants, as well as the detention of a group of saboteurs who allegedly prepared a terrorist attack at the station. On the morning of September 1, the Russian Defense Ministry reported an attempt by the Ukrainian landing force to seize the Zaporozhye NPP. The ministry called it a provocation aimed at disrupting the visit of the IAEA delegation.
